Air pump selection for 4 5gal DWC?

Post by Earl »

My first try at DWC. Gonna have 4 5gal DWC bubbler-buckets using these AIT 9" Spider "air stones."

http://www.ebay.com/itm/Hydroponic-Syst ... 1297325344" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

The mfr suggests 7.8 lpm into dual air lines into one 5gal. bucket. I don't understand stuff affected like back pressures or manifold split-lines but simple math suggests a single commercial pump of 40 lpm running 8-manifold (or 4-manifold with a splitter at each) would be be sufficient for my needs. It looks like the bigger single pump is cheaper--but they are very loud (loud is not good!). The smaller pumps would be individual to the bucket (4 pumps). More total cost, power costs, and heat added--but they are quieter.

Where is the pump(s) that find this balance? :fubird:

One 20-40 gallon pump per bucket.

rule of thumb

for every liter / galon of volume - 10 times the amount of air , and more

4 times 5 times 10 = 200 galon air pump , and more

more is always better :nutkick:
awoken the right way

If ya hang the air pump(s) or put them on a piece of styrofoam, it'll help with the noise/vibration.
Make sure the pump is above the water to prevent back-flow AND ya won't have to get a check valve.
