I'd say he's saying the people are more deserving of attention the material gain
Because the real gift is not the gold it's the giving. IMHO
Or: Revel in the good in people, not things.

Kind of cynical dill, is that because of the requirement from the pillar of charity. One never knows how freely it's given?
