In 2015, a routine construction project in Borujerd, Iran, led to the unexpected discovery of an ancient aqueduct system hidden beneath the remnants of a historic castle. This sophisticated network of clay pipes and pottery vessels showcased a remarkably advanced understanding of water management. The system is believed to date back to the Sassanian period (224-651 AD), though some experts suggest it could be even older. The materials and techniques used in the aqueduct indicate a high level of engineering skill, challenging our perceptions of ancient technology.

This significant find, with its advanced design for water purification and distribution, suggests a civilization with exceptional technical abilities. Ongoing research aims to uncover the precise origins of the aqueduct, adding to the intrigue and raising questions about the people who built it and what other secrets might lie beneath the surface.

The stone spheres of Costa Rica, also known as the Diquís spheres, are a collection of approximately 300 petrospheres found in the Diquís Delta and on Isla del Caño in Costa Rica. These spheres are notable for their nearly perfect roundness and their precise crafting, which is quite remarkable considering they were created over a thousand years ago.

The spheres range in size from a few centimeters to over 2 meters in diameter, and they are made from a variety of rock types, including granodiorite, gabbro, and limestone. The exact purpose of the spheres and the methods by which they were created are still a subject of debate among archaeologists and historians.

The spheres are believed to have been created by the indigenous people of Costa Rica, such as the Diquís culture, who inhabited the region between 300 BC and 1550 AD. While their exact purpose remains unknown, it is widely speculated that they may have had ceremonial or astronomical significance, or served as status symbols for the elite members of the society.

The stone spheres of Costa Rica were declared a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 2014 due to their cultural significance and mysterious origins. They continue to be a subject of fascination for archaeologists, historians, and tourists alike, and they have become an iconic symbol of Costa Rica's pre-Columbian heritage.

The Before and After of the Excavation of the Ancient Greek Stadium of Magnesia.

The Stadium of Magnesia on the Maeander, located in modern-day Turkey, is an ancient Greek stadium built in the 2nd century BC during the Hellenistic period. It was constructed into the natural slope of a hillside and could accommodate approximately 30,000 spectators, making it one of the largest stadiums of its time.

The stadium featured a long, narrow track with seating arranged in a U-shape, designed to host athletic events such as foot races and other competitions linked to religious festivals. Unique to this stadium are its well-preserved vaulted passageways, which athletes used to enter the arena, adding a dramatic touch to their entrances.

Excavations, which began in the early 20th century and have continued intermittently, have uncovered significant portions of the stadium, including its seating, starting lines, and some inscriptions. These findings provide valuable insights into the construction techniques and cultural importance of the stadium. Today, the site stands as a testament to ancient Greek architectural ingenuity and the enduring legacy of communal sports in Greek society

In the remote desert of Libya’s Tadrart Acacus lies a geological enigma known as the "Valley of the Planets." Among its most striking features are the peculiar disc-like boulders scattered across the landscape, resembling ancient relics from another world. These smooth, flat rock formations stand out against the more irregular shapes typically seen in desert environments, sparking intrigue among geologists and explorers alike.

While it’s generally believed that these boulders were shaped by wind and sand erosion over millions of years, their uniformity and disc-like appearance remain a mystery. How did natural forces create such perfectly rounded shapes? Some suggest the boulders are remnants of a much older geological structure, slowly worn down by time. Others theorize that unique wind patterns or underground forces may have played a role.

Yet, much remains unknown. The valley's remote location and Libya's political challenges have limited scientific exploration, leaving many questions unanswered. How old are these formations? What specific conditions led to their unusual shapes? Until more research is conducted, the Valley of the Planets will continue to perplex and captivate.

The man from the past
Ötzi is the name given to one of Europe's most well-preserved mummified bodies.
The body was found in the Ötzal Alps in 1991, and examinations tells us that he lived over 5000 years ago(Ca.3400-3100BCE). After his death the body dehydrated and his remains were mummified naturally in the glacier ice.
When the operation to take care of his body started, numerous leather fragments, string, pieces of hide and clumps of hay came to light.
This were pieces of Ötzi’s clothing, made from hide, leather and braided grass.
A coat, a belt, a pair of leggings, a loincloth, shoes and a bearskin cap were found.
Other items spread around him were a copper axe, flint dagger, a long stick(later identified as a bow) and a quiver containing 2 finished arrows and 12 arrow shafts.
Also the remains of some kind of backpack and two birch-bark containers, one of them containing traces of maple leaves and charcoal fragments.
Further examinations showed that his stomach contained traces of various types of grains, plants, fruits and meat.
61 tattoos in the form of lines and crosses were found on his body. These tattoos were not made by a needle like modern tattoos, instead they were made by a fine incisions into which pulverised charcoal was rubbed.
Later examinations along with x-ray revealed a flint arrowhead in his left shoulder.
The entry wound was discovered in his back.
The arrow shattered the scapula and damaged nerves and blood vessels indicating that Ötzi might have bled to death. His head also suffered a serious injury, this could have been caused by a fall when the arrow hit him or a blow to the head.
He must have been involved in some kind of fight a few days before his death since his right hand shows a deep cut.
Ötzi was about 45 years old when he died, 160cm(5ft. 3in) tall and weighed around 50kg.
His body and belongings are displayed in the South Tyrol Museum of Archaeology in Bolzano, South Tyrol, Italy.

A 14,000 year-old artwork - ‘Bison Licking a Bug Bite’

A 14,000 year-old reindeer antler carving of a bison and a living bison. Madeleine Cave, France.

Known as “Bison Licking a Bug Bite,” this small but detailed carving is a lifelike depiction of a steppe bison (Bison priscus), an extinct species of bison that roamed vast areas of Europe during the last ice age.
