worm bin
well around here worm castings are hard to find.
it's expensive and most is cut with peatmoss.
so i bought a worm bin and am going to make
my own castings. so thought i would show ya.
so first we have bottom tray with drain cloth
so worms don't fall into drain tray. then you set 1st tray into drain tray. then you cover bottom with 2-4 sheets of
newspaper. this is only done on 1st tray to
keep bedding and worms out of drain tray.
after 1st tray you just add bedding. next you mix up your bedding i used scoop for size
ref. will talk about bedding and feeding on next post. then fill tray 2/3 rds full of bedding. then let sit a week or so. put lid on and wait for worms. so i am waiting on worms. should be here mon or tue.
thanks for looking.

for bedding i used peat moss, shredded junk mail
and dead fan leafs. and lastly some composted
steer manure. you want bedding moist not wet.
i like to soak peat moss for least a week. note here
that you want to put peat in bucket then add water
or it will not soak in. junk mail i also soak for a week
i add water to it let sit 24 hours and then pour off the
water and refill. i do this because white paper has a
little bleach in it. this removes it. then soak leaf for week
also. all of them the longer the better. so after you got
everything soaked you can mix bedding.
i used 2 scoops peat moss 2 scoops shredded paper
1 scoop of leafs and 1/2 scoop steer compost. mix this
well. well that's what i am using and will be feeding
them some purina worm chow.
one little note on using peat moss is i used 1 tbs lime per
scoop when it was dry and mixed well before adding water.

how many pounds of worms are you going to start with???
ive read most folks would have bought more than they originally did, were they to start up another vermicompost bin...

worm bin
well i have got my worms 3 lbs of them.
bedding they came in was dry so i sprayed them with water. then i added a light so worms will burrow down
into the bedding. then after about 4 hours they had burrowed down. so next day was about 10 that had crawled out
and had dried up. then for a few days i will have to
pluck some out of bottom tray and off the lid.
so i got a 5 tray model. i started with 3 lbs of worms.
so far so good thanks for looking.

depends on how dry the bedding gets. also if your adding say food scrapsbentech wrote:do you have to keep adding water to the medium???

they have a lot of water in them. so would need to add dryer bedding.
the liquid that comes out drain i would not trust to put on a plant.
myself if it fills up will add back to bin after i added it to dry bedding.
if you want casting tea for plant's. you would put some castings into a
bag and soak in water over night. then add that tea to plant's.
this is new to me so i am just winging it if i fail you will see it here lol.

ya,
theyres a sizable segment of the organic food community that thinks they can feeds several pounds of food scraps into their worm farms...
seemed pie eyed to me.
so what about the scheduling of trays???
two trays means one gets nearly done and they you induce the worm to migrate into a fresh tray of new bedding...
A tray finishes and B tray starts...
im guessing its more complicanted than this...
whats your take on how many tray should be going at a time?

well with a big bin and enough worms the organic people are right.
i bought a 5 tray model. i expect to be using bottom tray after i add
either 4th or 5th tray. many months from now. it's a slow start up
process. i have started with 3 lbs of worms they can double in 90 day's
or so. a 5 tray bin i have read can have 8-12 lbs of worms with all bins
being used. how fast i can add a bin i do not know yet. then when going
at 4-5 trays i don't know how often i can harvest castings from bottom tray.
also if it goes well i will split worms into a 2nd bin before i get to 5th tray.
i am new to this but read a lot. thanks for looking

id guess that adding a tray, slows the process in the lowest bin,
as worms head for better pickings...
and thus less to pick over the bottom one, ones
id think it prudent when trying to get your first tray of castings to the point you cull
to not add new trays, levels, bins
but mabe theirs more to it
for all that ive read about vermicluture,
ive read nothing about when to pull your bottom tray
how much material in it do you have to sift out???
how do you know when?

well i have had the worms a week now.
they seem to be doing good. so today
i fed them. so i sprayed top of bedding
with water. then i added 3-4 TBS of coffee
grounds. then on top of that about 2-3 TBS
of worm chow and then a pinch of lime on top
of that. i had about 8-10 grubs or maggots on
top. i killed them they must have come with
the worms. so will keep a eye out for them. bentec i do not know answer to your questions
this is a new venture for me.
thanks for looking
