I will have tomatoes, chiles, sweet peppers, zucchini and pole/green/string beans (not sure if you have the same name for these).

Got well over 100lbs of tomatoes last year in a 3x16 area. The space is 6x16 but I had peppers, carrots, zucchini in it too.

The first thing I'm going to do is work some poop and compost into my garden.. something I'm ashamed to say I've never done before... I've been reading alot about how to proceed but I'm still not sure of the amounts of each to use.. I was actually thinking of mixing top soil in as well... any ideas on how to make my soil good again would be helpful.. I have a 35 gallon can of compost ready to go but I know I need more than that to make the soil good again...

I dump lots of maple leaves on my garden in the fall and whatever compost I have done or not. Cuz I fill that up with dead leaves too. All winter I have been tossing banana peels etc into it too. Till it all in the spring. Three years of this and it just keeps getting better. Toss all the grass from your first couple lawn mowings in there too.

You wants more specifics you need to be. Type of soil, how big an area etc.

i make my own compost, but it takes a while for me coz i live alone, kitchen waste, leafs twigs, paper etc... no meat or bones coz it attracts predators, you have to layer it all like lasgane and keep adding to it and airing out once every 2 weeks and in 3 months u have usable compost

Never have any luck with tomatoes man !!! by the time they are green and just abut to ripen its mid September and they never fully ripen on the vine.. its a lot of work with no gain at the end...

Thanks Whab... I have a small garden about 15 feet by 6 feet wide... the compost has been going for around 2 years so it's either good or ruined I have no idea until I dump it... My lettuce has done great over the past 3 years but my other veggies are terrible... my house was built in the 90's.. before that it was woods... so when I first started my garden things were great for a few years but then I guess I depleted the soil for whatever minerals things like tomatoes and peppers thrive on because I can not get anything to grow... they just look pitiful, try to throw some fruit and then they give up and die... I'm guessing that lettuce doesn't need alot of what I don't have because I have great results with various types of leaf lettuce... I also can't grow zucchini.. it does well until it sets flowers and then I may get 1 zucchini before the whole plants wilts and disappears into the ground... it's very weird.. same with cucumbers... it makes me crazy...

you cant really ruin compost, just throw it in the garden and till it in early spring, it will finish composting

if you have woods that arent pine you have browns and greens for composting and or tilling into your garden, just in diff seasons

might want to grab a few scoops of that forest soil also to reinvigorate the beneficial soil biology

i grow a garden mostly in 1/2 wood wine barrels ez to work.
i do mostly potato's,carrot's,beans,cabbage,artichoke and
herbs ect. anyway for my compost pile i have a rabbit cage
over mine the rabbit shit and shredded paper and house
scraps work well to add to the wine barrels each year.
i bought a few of these seedless personal watermelons
last year and 1 had a nice black seed i am thinking of
growing it in grow room. short season here for outside.

Hey Dill! cool List fo sure! I like the idea of variety of flowers for all day fragrance. I’d love to hear how the brussel sprouts grow for ya. I been wanting to grow some myself, but the I’m the only one here that eats ‘em.

This year I’m growing the usual suspects: orange, red and yellow Bell peppers, chilies, tomatoes, beans, peas, cucumbers, zucchini, yellow squash, winter squash, cantaloupes, lettuce, leeks and various herbs.

New items to try this year will be Roma tomato, broccoli, spaghetti squash, shallots, Chinese cabbage and a new sweet melon called “Swan Lake”

I dumped my compost can today and it was a beautiful thing... black and sweet smelling... tomorrow I will put my buttercrunch lettuce seedlings in and sprinkle a mix of lettuce seeds as well... I was going to buy a few bags of compost tomorrow to stretch the compost I made.. and then I'll try tomatoes one more time and maybe zucchini but not until mid may ... both have sucked for me the past few years so I'm hoping the compost and peat I add helps ..

Lettuce should be ok too Hax... I've had lettuce covered in snow and be just fine.. and I've had temps go down to way under 30 degrees and they were still ok... Our Kmart here is the only place I can find started veggie plants... they have all the cool weather varieties like Arugula, Cauliflower, spinach and turnips along with several varieties of lettuce... but I have only tried lettuce and spinach so far...

how big are the containers? I tried doing lettuce in the grow room one year in pots and they did terrible... I never tried out on the deck though.... lettuce likes lots of water and containers dry out fast... I've done cherry and grape tomatoes in containers and they did great..

Got back from week off and the tomato seedlings were overdue to go in. they’re in back in the pic, In the front are the peppers and various other stuff around. Whata sweet mess!

Put the tomatos, peas and beans in yesterday and leeks, broccoli, and lettuce today,
I’m in it now and loving it.

Ben ttech, I grow for my family (1 – 5 people depending) and a neighbor or two, but we’re mostly vegetarians … ‘specially in summertime. And I always germ more seedlings then I need, already gave away shitload of xtra seedlings to friends, I luv it!

And as for virility, I can say fo sure growing things always give me hard on.

Thanks man! Yeah I like ‘em. lucky for me my soil has lot of clay, (will get pottery grade stuff out of the compost piles) I remove and use the clay that settles/compost down to the bottom of the beds when I turn the beds, I use it to caulk up the seams some. A few waterings and it all seals nicely. And a little porous is good for aerating the soil I think,
at least I haven’t consider changing ‘em yet.
And I can use the holes to grow other things in, optimizing the space. Perfect for lettuce,cabbage,leeks,bush beans,chives,herbs …

The broq and squash are in chimney flues.

woke up this mourning and took long pull on my pipe. Suck down some coffee and faced the tasted the fact I might not be growing anything at all. Sure the peas, cabbage, lettuce, chives can take it… but .. but .. Snow level was “suppose” to be 3000 feet higher!

Ahhh BB, that’d be closing the barn door. I have a bunch old window screens that I use for snow or sun protection on occasion, but the forecast and my bones said the nite temps would be in the upper 40’s and it was still raining at 3 odd something in the mourning but at day break .. it turned to wet snow. Not really a freeze, sorta.

It’s dried out now. Not so bad, the peppers and maters look to pull through which is good. I think most of the cucs and cantaloupe are lost but they’re quick growing and its only May. gotta grow more stuff .. yay baby!

Hubbert squash, never heard of it before .. a winter squash, sounds interesting.

It is consistently sweet, and can be substituted for virtually any other winter squash. Just in case you think you’ve never had it, you might want to think again if you’ve ever eaten pumpkin pie made of canned pumpkin. Very frequently hubbard squashes are used in place of pumpkin because of their relative cheapness and similar flavor. They’re a great choice if you want to make your own pie because the flesh tends to be consistently denser than the flesh of almost all but the sugar pumpkins.

Fingerling variety? I know usually people use the larger baking kind, but I love fingerlings for Pommes Anna. I grew some blues a few years ago and I liked them a lot. Not real heavy producers but I didn't mind.

every day for the past the last few years i have been walking past this house in my street and i always admired the rose bush in the front garden, really pretty and so many blooms every season you can hardly see the stems it has so many blooms..

Today i was walking past and saw the man in the garden so i thought i make eye contact first and then smile at him, he looked at me and i said " i really like your roses and have been admiring them for the past few years" he replied "OH thank you young man" he said he has had this rose bush for 22 years and has been just taking cuttings from it and been planting them in the back of the garden and front, and then he asked me if i wanted a few cuttings in November and i sad YES PLEASE lol.

I told him i have tomato seedlings squash, all sorts in my garden, he was interested in the squash so i dropped two seedlings of to him and a few packs of veggie seeds for him for next season..

That got me thinking, there are plenty of nice gardens in my street i should ask everyone for cuttings from the rose bushes and give them something back in return, so ill be on the prowl for more types of roses bushes tomorrow LOL

I've hauled in about 30 pounds of strawberries so far, put up a shitload of freezer jam this week. Tomatoes are still smallish. Onions and garlic are doing well and pumpkins, gourds, zucchini and cukes are chugging along nicely

I hear ya dill, I’m at war with gophers this year, this war is new for me. Despite two cats and dog who loves to find and dig out their dens. More burrows keep showing up!

Hmm the Zucchinis and yellow squash are just starting to fruit, a few more days.

Beans are slow. A few green tomatoes. The cucumbers and sweet melons are still seedlings ( from the snow killing the originals). Gonna transplant ‘em today(?) The winter squashes are exploding in a jungle growth, but the fruit won’t be ready till late summer.

Shallots, chive, oregano, rosemary, cilantro and tarragon have all been producing for a while. Just pick the first dill, nothing like fresh dill in a veggie sauté or baked on bread.

Oranges are all picked and the tree is now on a high N diet for new foliage. Only a handful of lemons on the tree, but It getting ready to blossom again, best bee attractor I have.

Cherries are staring to ripen, pick a few already, they’re always good.
Apples coming along,
No plums apricots or almond this year… so sad.

I didn't do a veggie garden this year...it's good to let gardens take a year off every now and then or do crop rotation....I did plant 3 thundercloud plums, 2 raywood ash, 8 lilacs in a hedge and one weeping willow that is yellowing a little to quick...grapes should be next but might wait till next year...?....I like to start with fresh soil in the MJ garden each year and the old soil works great as a soil conditioner for other plants.

I didn’t even know there were a purple bush variety, I had been growing yellow and green bush beans for the color variety. This year I’m only growing a two yellow bush beans and trying out these Kentucky Wonder green pole beans, an heirloom supposedly.
Those beans in the pic are growing way high up into some convoluted chicken wire making ‘em hard to reach. Thus I’m letting ‘em go to be seeds for next year.

The Kentucky wonder isnt the big producer they are hyped to be (good tasting tho). My purples are out producing ‘em 2:1, but then they’re adapted to the garden by generations.

I din't even know there were purple ones at all, until last year. Did a Burbee variety pack, got green, yellow, & purple. Only planted the yellow seeds this year thinkin I'd jus git the yellow beans, left the purple & brown seeds in the pack....got purple beans though.

I always start the pepper and tomatoes seedlings first, about two months before planting, that is now.

Peppers.

Red, yellow (golden), and orange bells. The two pill jars contain yellow and orange bell seeds collected last year. And Sweet Yellow banana.

The glass jars have the hot Italian wax and habanero chilies from the kitchen, I just take some seeds out when ready to sow.

The bottom ziplocks contain new seeds to my garden from a friend direct from Peru, a Peruvian wax on the right and on the left some long waited Red Rocoto with black seeds and blue flowers. Dill here first introduced us to this Rocoto from his garden, thanks man, looking forward to growing some out!

yeah they’re purty good. Always vigorous plants, great germ rates. They change the packets recently, now they have a little ziplock on top, a nice touch, but drives the cost up.

the rocoto is a great chili plant you can grow it on a trellis to, and its one of the easiest plants to take cuttings from, they root under a few days really impressive, the stems are thick and hairy.

I started the Toms, Peppers and leeks first cause they take the longest, Also Lettuce cause it can handle the early cold weather, even take a little snow with aplomb.

youll be growing lots of tomatoes huh!!!?? i have just seen my beetroot seedlings pop out, first time growing beetrot, i have some cayenne peppers seeds that i germinated and around 12 tomato seeds italian plum and 100 and 1000s grow like bunch of grapes.

its still early for us in UK, but ill be sowing cape goosberry/asparagus pea/garden peas/ carrots and lots of salad and lettuce, maybe brocolli and parsley too

Got some new snow fall last night, the seedlings indoors are happy but the almond tree was in full flower, might loose all the possible fruit on it, apricots and the plums. The cherry and apple will love it.

you might be wondering why i am growing in pots and containers and not in the ground

well......

the thing is.......

i am surrounded by huge trees on both sides of my garden, really huge ones ( conifers) and the roots over time have spread into my garden and i cant dig more than 5 inches down before i hit huge chunky roots of the conifer tree, there are a few places were i can plant in the ground and thats at the back, were i grow my herbs :0 and thats only in certain places.

Merry something you can do when you can't get any more finished compost and don't want to use harsh fertz is use 3 or 4 times the strength of molasses you would spray on leaf as a foliar and spray it on the ground and you'll get a bunch of microbes on a sugar high making more nutes available.If your nursery has 20 or 25 lb. bags of Azomite ground rock.get that.
my other favorite since i can't buy bulk castings anymore is Eggshells ground up in a coffee grinder,they should be sun dried first to complete dryness.

Intrinsic sorry for the snow,i had it snow in the middle of july before and it was kinda late to replace.You'll have some more out there in no time.

Hey Anu. Welcome to the veggie side here. I’ve pondered yer eggshell advice and sounds real good, thanks. I’m always looking to increase the calcium in my soil. Might short circuit there route to the compost bins and grind ‘em up directly for the ‘mater plants (calcium to prevent blossom end rot)

Were you talking about the snow pics from the fist page, that was last year.

The almond tree in snow was this year and I just cannot get any more nut trees out this year.

To my eyes, it looks like an insect problem of some sort.
I don't know of any diseases that would "eat" holes in the leaves like that.

Checked very carefully for any little bugs, droppings, eggs etc?

Hi Dill, sorry I missed yer last post there.

The rocotos grew vigorous and it looks like they are going to be tall plants.
They are not as I expected, short with tight nodes as with the habanero.
The delicate fuzzy hairs on the leafs is different, Not noticeable in the pics tho.

Dill, did your rocoto have the same fuzzy leafs?

More stuff. More or less finished planting the seedlings. The cucumbers are hurting from sun scald, hafta start more instead of sitting here at the desk.

Tomato flowers on the Cherokee, bees are starting to show up too.

Legend tomato just put in.

Bell pepper bed, chives blooming off to the sides.

Yeah the chives are real nice, they are fist thing up after snow melt, and then it’s baked potatos for a while! Easy to clone the colonies, i just cut ‘em halve with a trowel and replant. I'm always doing it, hence i have too many now. I’ll email ya a colony of chives to you, got some xtra rocoto seedlings too.

hope yours catch on, maybe in yer climate maybe the chives will produce nearly year round.

It is in the daisy family (Asteraceae) fer sure. No reason it couldn’t be an herb too.
I don’t know but it does have the same flower and leaf structure as the Feverfew pic in the wikipedia entry, so I say a good bet it is.

Sure, from my compost which I amend the garden with, I frequently have store tomato and bell pepper pop up. I got a “volunteer” pepper going now, we’ll see what is exactly later.

Be sure to use ripe fruit, ie red, yellow or orange pepper as opposed to just green ones.
Melons, cukes squashes all are good too, even dried beans will work.

Also note many libraries have a seed bank where you get free seeds, Along with dudes such as myself, garden centers sometimes will also donate last years seed stock.

Spring. Spring is seed starting time. Natch your local climate dictates yer growing season. On the coast I could go ten months out of the year, plant whenever … now … 4 or 5 months. and lovin it!

Snow peas or just about done with more cantaloupes growing in to replace 'em. Cucumbers and hot chilies are just comin in. The Rocoto is flowering but no fruit yet.
Eating plenty of tomatoes, beans, summer squashes and sweet chilies.

purslane is a hardy sprout in my neighborhood and ive been eating a ton of it for the past month as its breaking out everywhere

Thanks ben for identifying purslane, I’ve been fighting it for the last couple of years, since I started to use this “weed free” steer manure. The Purslane just explodes in growth and becomes a huge plant if ya blink.
Most weeds are edible.. so I gave it a taste. Not a second time, no sir.

the rocoto is looking good infact you have lots of chillies to and you seem to have lots of fruits on each plant.. the basil leaves are huge, and your tomatoes are red on the vine,

i am growing the san maranzo plum tomato but we have had the worst weather since 100 years in UK, i think the food prices will hike up in the winter this is what everyone i saying coz of the shitty weather all summer, i mean summer is almost over, we are in the first week of august and i have just got some small pea sized tomatoes growing.. and i can forget the pumpkins man lol

My pole beans seemed to stopped production, got yellow bush beans flowering, but bean dry for now. Going put some more pole beans in where the peas used to be,

hey ben,

there is a technique called 3 sisters planting, the native American Indians were doing this centuries before the white man arrived in the mayflower.. they sowed corn/squash and runner beans together as they make good companions, the sweetcorn takes a lot of nitrogen out of the soil and the runner beans are grown a bit later on near the base of the corn plant so it can use the stem to climb up as well as fixing the nitrogen when the plant dies ( legume family) and the squash helps to keep the moisture in the ground suppress the weeds coz of the huge fan leaves so i guess that is "companion planting",

i am growing sweetcorn and runner beans in a pot the beans grew around the stem and caught up to quickly with the corn plants so now i have to use bamboo canes,

No ben I haven’t done much with companion plants planting. Other then trail and error. Bells peppers and winter squash do great together,
Cucumbers and beans growing close together I’ve problems with.

Also I tried some more the purslane, and not so bad when the leaves are young, kinda good, I could probably sell it in a restaurant, unique taste.

Yep, I think it's Feverfew.
It does smell/taste not very nice.. a little bit like catnip, but.... well, sort of NOT like catnip, too.

We grew some a couple of years back to try out as a migraine remedy.

Didn't work.

Interesting strawberry plants, too.. I've not seen them with pink flowers before, only white.
Never grown any myself, but mum & dad used to... about 40 years ago.

Here two of the picante chili harvest: Red Peruvian wax chilies and orange habaneros. I’ll dry these and a few more and that’ll last the year for me. Still got another native Peru chili and the Rocoto waiting to turn color.
I ate one red rocoto so far, raw on a tomato sandwich. Got a good kick but not too bad. Rich taste. Yet my hiking partner bit his heel and howled at the moon. Go figure..

Back to the garden. Yesterday’s harvest. Slim pickings. The garden is starting to shut down with cold nights and short days. It might all be over next week, prediction of freezing temps and good possibility snow.

Purple and yellow beans, 4 orange Peru chilies, 2 little red chilies, an orange habanero, a tiny yellow squash. one Yellow gypsy pepper, two bells and a puny leek.

Eh not getting anything but chives and sage from the garden anymore. The cukes have been done for a while now. I'm in zone 5. I pick my tomatoes when they blush because once they start to ripen theyre cut off from the plant by the abscission layer. The only thing that can get in or out then is water.

No the twine didnt hold. lol Most of the tomato plants ended up on the ground. I'm going to buy a roll of concrete reinforcing wire this spring and make my own cages. Having about 30 tomato plants would get really expensive in bought cages. The tomatillos also need them. Man they just keep growing and growing.

30 plants? You selling tomatoes? I got about 1500 pounds of tomatoes from 8 plants.

I'm in zone seven.

I blanched so many tomatoes that year that my back went out, I think I hate blanching more than trimming cannabis. Four plants give me enough chili and spaghetti sauce for the year, plus enough to give fresh tomatoes to my parents for a few months. My kids use to love BLT sandwiches, not anymore.

Ya I sold some at the farmers market. I think I sold more tomato plants than tomatoes though. I dont get anywhere near that yield with heirlooms.

I don't think it matters if the plants are heirlooms or not as much as it matters if they're determinate or indeterminate and how long flowers will set in your environment....Where I live plants will put out new flowers for more than three months....I've harvested off of the same plant from June-Nov.

Heirlooms arent known for yielding great, kind of the opposite. But ya all mine were indeterminate and we cant put much in the ground until may 20th or so and theyre usually done by September.

lol I dont know what to tell you. Me and intrinsic can see them and I assume Sun can too.
