Yes, I know they have supplied the most military aid. I also know that if a nation has a good relationship with Russia, they are not going to risk that relationship by joining NATO. No matter the incentives.

So everyone should ask themselves: why have so many European nations joined NATO?

Also, look at what Putin has done in the past: assassinating opposition leaders and critics both within his own country and in foreign nations. Invading Crimea in 2014. Supporting Assad and other dictators.

Just ask the UK how they feel about that. Now ask other nations how they feel about Putin. The fact Ukraine is getting widespread support from nearly all other European nations is telling. The Europeans know Putin better than anyone. If they thought Ukraine was to blame for its own demise, they wouldn't be helping. But a lot of them are now scared they will be next. With good cause.

What no-one seems to be talking about was when most nations joined NATO. Boris Yeltsin had a good relationship with Europe and the US, but came under internal pressure to resign in 1999 after appointing Putin as Prime Minister the same year.

So, how many nations joined NATO before Putin rose to power to become Secretary of the Russian Security Council that led to his appointment as Prime Minister?

Putin's rise to power was consequential to the rise of NATO.
