I learned gun safety from a 5 year old...

Was this your friend?
No...my friend was run over and killed by a drunk driver three years later.

But that does remind me of another story...

Another friend, age 9....his parents didn't think he knew there was a .22 pistol in the house, let alone where it was hidden. But when the family's two dobermans attacked his 3 year old sister, he immediately retrieved the gun and shot the dogs dead, saving his sister's life.

You either teach your child to respect guns...or you don't.

Or learn to train/respect your dogs.

You always hear people say "It attacked for no reason!" but there is always a reason.

The part I don't get about your story is, who taught him to use the .22 pistol if his parents never told him about it?

"OK son, today I'm going to teach you how to load, cock, aim and fire a .22 with the safety off."

Turns to wife . . . "Haha! The little bastard will never know we own a .22 pistol, even though I'm teaching him how to use it! Stupid little twat. BTW, did you feed the dogs?"

the supposed conservatives in this have run into a problem.

their all for further constraints on first amendment rights for social good while at the same time refusing to address the second amendment in similar fashion

and mind you, they think the first sentence of the second amendment shouldnt even be read let alone concidered
the intolerance of the old order is emerging from the rosy mist in which it has hitherto been obscured.

I'd be scared of upsetting those well-regulated 5-year-old militia members, too!

"Oppressor! Eat lead bitch!"

I had a colt 45 I used to carry concealed back when I was toting cash to the bank and keep in the office for late nights. I gave it to my sister because she lives by herself in the woods. I just had no need for it, after my coffers dried up.
Guns are like Cars, they are machines that can be used or misused.
There will always be deaths with either.
It's usually the operator that is at fault.
Why haven't they ever made cars that would top out at 40 mph? that would undoubtedly save millions of lives.
Sure they have safety measures like belts and airbags, but after 60 mph these have limited effect on preventing harm.

I've always figured if society gets to a point that I really need a gun, I'll just put on a maga hat and borrow one from a local redneck.

I completely agree. But we at least impose age, mental health and other physical limits on people before we give them licenses to operate machinery. That doesn't mean a farm kid can't drive a tractor or shoot the eyes out of rat, but they are usually doing that on private property and most farmers ensure their kids are competent before letting them rip. They can't afford to lose the machinery, much less the lives of their kids.

Are you talking to me? Did you not read my first post? I'm an A-grade shooter with club trophies and state titles to match. I have a custom Sako 85 .223 which I built myself, as well as lever and bolt guns, including a very accurate 6.5 Creedmoor that will put six consecutive shots into less than 0.5 MOA.

I'll put this rifle and my skills up against anyone here out to 500m. Sako 85 in .223

I live in a state with constitutional carry laws, including concealed carry. Open carry has always been legal here, outside of city limits. I conceal carry, always. We have a huge problem with dangerous stray dogs (and even more dangerous stray humans), so I like to keep a gun on me- even on my own property. I often carry a rifle or shotgun if I’m out fishing or camping, as I am a disabled woman and am alone (often at night in very remote areas).

A pedophobe then? :dunno:

You certainly seem to have an irrational fear of something.
You are intimating that folks should disarm themselves so LEO can feel safe.
Perhaps society would be better off to not shirk the responsibility to have a competency requirement for cops...
...for both the handling of guns, and mental status to not be scared of everything and everyone.
