after seeing a couple outlets melt down
i recomment inspecting every box in the branch circuit line your pulling regular high use out of
lots of 80's work out there builders wernt doing outlets up with through wiring best it could be
and since ive seen a couple boxes melt ive noticed connections in boxes showing signs of heat damage
inspect and wire up proper all boxes your using regular
lights
fuck
your entertainment centers can be major pulls of current too

Yup, good idea don't wait till you smell ozone.
Timely advice.
if you have a well/pressure tank check the pressure gauge contacts for build up and pits, lot of power going through the contacts clicking on and off. Wild temperature differences
Just replace mine last week cuz u can see pits, preemptive.

back in the days boxes were wired up just straight through the outlet
eventually learned a top job wiring the box with a pigtail to the outlet
but that wasnt the rule back when i firest learned it

One to rot

pigtail is the short third wire you connect into the connection in the back of the box where the lines circuit continues to down the line
this short wire then feeds the outlet itself
so the outlet isnt itself part of the branch circuit
on the cheap you can wire boxes fast and they become essential to downfeed power
in the 80's i didnt know better
was still learning and none of the contracters teaching me knew better

more specifically
on a branch you got two romex's cabled into a box
you have to make them connect
in the old days you just stripped the wires and plugged them into the outlet
it works but effectively the current through the box has running through the outset to get along
what you want to do is make the through power through a good wire nut
and you add a third wire thats short to power the outlet off of that connection
pigtail
