compost

Post by Lrus007 »

got a lot of leaf stacked up over time.
i wet trim and dry on a screen. so my trim has
shade leafs in it. so i came up with a idea.
i got some 1 inch square stiff cage wire. is 2' wide
so i cut 2 pieces one 16" and other 26" long.
with a big shallow box the 16" sat on it well.
then i sifted the leaf. top of screen into a 32 gal
trash can and what fell thru from box to brown
bag. kind of worked out to 2 brown bags to 2
fills of the trash can. i will dry sift the fines.
have a barrel composter i packed 1st trash can
into it. then soaked some leaf in a 5 gal bucket.
next day added the wet leaf and a few hand fulls
of pelleted nitrogen. spun it a bunch then soaked
more leaf in bucket. the next day the leaf had got
limp. so added 2nd trash can of leaf. then the wetted
leaf and tumbled it some more. i started this on sunday
so today leaf in tumbler is almost wet enough. tonight
i got some sugar and yeast growing to add tomorrow
will help the compost kick off faster. then when it rots
and starts to compost will toss in some worms from the
worm bins. i have many bags yet to go thru. i hope i can
make the bin cook off quickly.
sorry no photo's i was lazy..

Sounds like compost tip #51

I like the idea of seeding the bin with your worms. With fast composting, do you think it might get too hot for the worms?

thanks for link i did not know we had a compost thread already.
well you want it to start heating up. then wait till it's been
hot a while. then add the worms they will move away from
the heat. also the heat will make eggs they lay hatch faster.
adding yeast today for the microbes.

compost

did much more reading. the bin will be to hot
for worms. 130-190º when cooking off. glad i read that.
easy enough after it cooks off and gets compost done.
i will put into trash can. then add worms and let them
do there thing. also read to only tumble every 3 days.
tumbler is a little over 1/2 way full wanted 2/3 but
this is trial run. if it works will fill more next time.
will leave some in tumbler for the microbes next run.
then the 2-3 week compost is if you have everything
perfect. i am far from perfect... so about 2 months or so.
ps i might go mental and pack more in there lol

less turns means hotter pockets of decomposition should be expected?

We compost all our kitchen scraps and unwanted trim. We always have loads of worms in there.

well to compost takes heat 160º or so.
in a compost pile the worms can get away from the heat.
in a tumbler the whole thing gets hot. to hot for worms.
it has kicked off. i see steam coming out of bin today.

Sounds like you need more carbon inputs.
