I have a mother plant that I want to transplant but it has a huge root structure in the bucket.
I understand that root pruning is fine but have never tried before.
How much can be safely removed?

Wow! I wasn't planning to touch the ball, just trim the length for ease of repoting, but if I could get 2 3ft plants out of one I might consider splitting it vertically.

Get bigger pots or plant them in appropriately sized holes, root mass is too valuable in an outdoor situation to be significantly pruning off.

It is going in the ground plus about 1 foot in a raised bed. I have a feeling you can't just dump a huge root system from DWC into the soil. I want to trim it back and let it grow into the soil.

on soil plants i have trimmed roots.
when i used water cloner to root.
to transplant i used very dry soil to get best
coverage around the roots. then watered heavy.
kept very wet a week or so then let dry out a bit.
so the water roots would change into soil roots.
hope this helps in some way.

Upon closer examination, the roots passing through the holes in the basket are stuck there and I don't think severing them is a good idea.
So I am going to just flower it inside but as an experiment, I went ahead and reduced the root volume by 50% and I am going to watch it for a couple of weeks before flowering.
