here is pg's poppy thread *twilsons idea....
i planted my plot a few weeks ago. but my brother has
a bunch of free range birds, they ruined the plot. well he
felt bad. so today he got me a 1/2 pick up truck of cow
compost from dairy farm he is pouring cement at. so i spread
it into my garden barrels and the rest into poppy plot.
i tilled it in 4 times and planted. looks great will see what
tomorrow brings. the white on top is not seed it is fert's i spread
after i planted. wonder how fucked up it will be tomorrow...
poppy plot.jpg
to plant poppys till soil fine. then spread seeds on top do NOT cover.
let rain wash them into soil. add a high N fert composted chicken shit
is about the best. plant in late fall or early spring.
thats about it for now get planting if you have seeds...

turkish, persian white, hen & chicks, giganteum and tazmanian

i bought mine years ago so not sure on where to buy.
the plot has a mix of all 5 kinds. then i have some pot's
that are 1 of each kind as a seed crop.

I'm interested in getting whatever medication I might need to stay away from the "government" as much as possible in case I should ever have to cut my own gangrene leg off. Since I can't depend on them.

My current contingency is lots of vodka. Which is bad if your doing your own surgery.

Reminds me of the story where the get gets shipwrecked on a deserted island with no food but pounds and pounds and pounds of heroin.

He eats himself while numbing the pain to stay alive.

He's down to mostly nubs and no ship in sight.

"Ok" he looks down and says to himself. "All this sitting around your getting a little fat around the waist."

They making any progress. I've been talking to a few people about growing poppies and they have all been extremely interested. That doesn't mean they are ready to grow their own but it's an important plant that has had a big impact on humans so people are curious.

Last time I looked my local nursery had somniferum seeds in the rack labeled as Danish Flag or Paeoniflorum poppies. They are both opium poppies that are potent and like other ornamental somniferums, both will after ten years or so atavistically revert gradually back to specie types--pale pink or purplish with maroon spots on each petal. Easiest fucking plant to grow ever that's not an actual weed, even makes cannabis (which is pretty fucking easy) look difficult. If you know what they look like you will find them growing in yards all over your town, an extremely common plant to see in most places. Seed can be purchased in bulk cheaply online from hundreds of sources, buy a couple of ounces (or pounds for a big yard) and just broadcast it in your flower beds in the spring and that's all you'll need to do. It's an annual but it'll self sow and keep coming back if you just let it. Don't try to make opium yourself, it's a lot of work and wasteful. Once the pods dry shake the seeds out onto the ground or into a contained to sow next spring and keep the empty pods and grind them into powder in a coffee grinder and make tea from it. You'll get about 10x more effect per plant than you would slashing the pods and collecting and drying the latex.

And I'll add that if you possess even the tiniest hint of self-control, you'll never become addicted. Just don't get high on them more often than every week or two and you'll never have to worry about becoming addicted or even developing a tolerance.

i only have tea for fun 1-2 times a year.
add another 3-4 times for migraine's a year.
then smoke opium 2-3 times a year.
that is about it except the first 3 poppys i lance
every year i lick them. that's about it. read some
bad storys about tea heads that were hooked bad.
so if you try it be wise.

The tea can also be used in place of prescription pain pills. The tea from two large seed pods is a typical dose for pain. It's ridiculous to pay a doctor to write a script for expensive pills some asshole billionaire is getting rich on when you can get the same relief free from a plant that grows like a weed in your yard.

Lots of Punjabi immigrants in Lower Mainland BC are poppy tea addicts, but if you don't make a habit of using it you'll never need to worry about it.

I've had the Murphy's law experience. Not the theory.

Remember M. Emmet Walsh's speech at the beginning of " Blood Simple" ? I live by those words because I have experienced them. Not just read about them. You need to be aware that EVERYTHING can go wrong in the worst possible way.

I had my experiences in life with heroin. Live with some heavy duty armed to the teeth guys hired to protect the main Burrito in San Antonio.

Forced me to shoot up one night to prove I wasn't a narco. I've told that story but to add to it. I used heroin maybe 6 to 8 times and began getting strong cravings for it. Very addictive.

Whenever I'd take it I couldn't eat or drink anything because I'd throw up.

In Okinawa you could walk in drug store and buy anything you wanted. Even have "special" made by the pharmacists. She seemed to enjoy concocted pills us G.I.s loved.

Used to love them. Bought 3 bottles of codeine one time drank them and danced naked on a full moonlight beach with my girlfriend and a lesbian friend.

Some people can't handle drugs. Sherry one of my lesbian friends in the Army became addicted to speed. It was easy to buy but of course it was illegal for military to go in those places and were surely watched (to what point?) because we all had TOP FUCKING SECRETE military clearances.

*no jokes are permitted here about military intelligence being an oxymoron.

She'd usually get me to pick up some stuff for her but she'd go through it so fast and couldn't wait for me to go shopping again.

Drugs will mess you up my friends.

Wish I had a cigerette... lol .. wow addiction coming back .

Not to put any downers on your Poppy Plants!.

in the end we are selfish greedy beings

Crap that new rule requires a definition. How do you know if someone is a Canadian?

You ask them "How do you keep a moose out of your house?"

If they say anything other than... "Huh? How the hell would I know that?"

They are canadian. Obvious sign #1 They actually start yammering on about all the moose assaults they have experienced.

How to trick a Canadian into admitting they are canadian.

also made a spot for the seed pots.
got 4 10' 6x6" treated posts. i laid tar paper down.
then put 2 posts onto it and the pots.
i then made a 10' long by 3' wide new plot.
tilled ground a few times. adding bird shit to it.
then i added a bale of peat moss. tilled a few more times
i filled pot's with soil. then i planted pot's and plot.
now i am waiting for some good rain's.
is still time to plant for this year. i will try to replant
this fall so they will do better.
here's photo's enjoy....

imagine the weather at 52 north ... and last year it werent even the persians, it were decorative strains ... with small bulbs, size of big male thumb max ... courious as i am, i took a handfull of dried bulbs, after season wore off and they were already dead ... separated the seeds and crushed the rest into a mug, which i poured boiling hot water over it ... well this tea was given to my ex .. only for scientific purpose of course ... and it was funny watching here getting the itches a nodding away .... lol

The self-sown somiferums around here are just showing flower buds now. They are a fairly common garden plant in most older American neighborhoods, they easily go feral--where they will within a few generations revert atavistically to the species-- a pale purple flower with inky purple spots at the base of each petal.

our poppy "field" infront of our growshop is in full fruit, flowered already 2 weeks ago ..

some mofos managed to to kill 2 poppy plants, it were idiots, no signs of scraping/milking, just pure vandalism ... fuckerz!

but its funny to watch the "neighbors" , as poppy = opium = drug = heroin = terror ... and so on; they cant believe that its perfectly legal to grow poppies, they are even more perplexed when i tell them, that there are no differences between persian and european strains ... lol ... i mean sure there are (some minor), somewhere beyond the comma sign ... but in the end, it doesnt matter at all
the difference is much bigger when comparing cannabis plants and their ingredients ... just plz remind me to upload a pic or 2

Well you guys seem to be having a lot of fun with this so I thought I’d give it a whirl

If I can find time I’ll try to snap a better pic in a couple of days when there’s more flowers open.

Pretty neat that it’s like the Ronco of perennials. Just plant it and forget it.

Funny.... mine are Afghan Blue.

This year’s run is for seed... but...
Other perennial members of the Papaveraceae family that are referred to as poppies include Meconopsis, a genus of tall perennials with four-petaled, crinkled flowers. One of the best known meconopsis is Himalayan blue poppy

I've grown Meconopsis betonicifolia from some seeds I "borrowed" from VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver, who do a great job with it. Not an easy plant to grow, even though the climate here mostly suits it.

Yours are definitely P. somniferums.

well i did not do a seed crop this year. i did last year.
oddly i do not have any in my plot i planted this spring.
i even replanted it but nothing. been a weird weather year.
i will do a fall planting in the plot this fall for next year.
had a bad fire last year between my house and freeway.
it burned all the under brush and lucky me not my house.
anyway i spread seeds down the burned fence line.
i noticed some blooms one day. i will let self seed.
so i do not have any poppys growing this year.

my new plot did not do very well where it is.
so last fall i put a bunch of shit some peat moss
and limed it 4 times.tilled a bunch. then i planted winter rye.
it grew well, i should have taken photo of mini lawn.
had some sun last few days. tiller did not want to start.
got it dealt with. i have tilled plot a few times now.
i will till it a few more times. then got my poppy seeds
ready to go. late but been cold out and to wet to till...

it's poppy planting time of year again.

got a little rain then sun for days. i seen some sprouts.
so i watered them with watering can. later that day seen
nothing. figured shit i fucked them up. tossed a little more seed.
well i had just knocked them down watering. i know better.. "let rain
set the seeds in ground to sprout." so yesterday i notice that one
of my brothers cat's has a compass and transit. pissed or shit in the
very middle of the plot. cat might have a tape measure also lol.
tossed more seed where it had done the deed. today looking
at them pretty sure the poppies took in this spot. the sprouts
are kind of in waves. like pattern i had hand spread the seeds.
3 years they did not like this spot. after all the amending tilling.
then tilling in a cover crop should be good soil.
it is not to late.. plant em if you got them

some trees do that, right? fending off competition...

curious if they all do it the same way
ok, so i looked it up

the term is Allelopathy

its seems to be accomplished two different ways. one is toxin in dead leaves that get watered in after falling and the other is toxins released by roots

i hear what your saying my friend.

but i think rocks cast the first shadows
and they did it glowing hot

the questions is weather depth exists independent of observer

and worse
how do we honestly know there was no observer

simply because life hadnt evolved yet

They're blooming here all over town right now, you can get seed at the local nurseries—mostly fancy hybrids, though if you allow them to self-sow, after a couple of years they revert to species-type like in Lrus' photos above.

i wanted to try fall planting . so no winter rye
this year. been raining for weeks now. today it
was nice out. so i hand weeded and raked plot.
then spread seed. the seeds need rained in. means
prob no rain for a while. kind of hopes so. i still
got yacons to dig yet.

well did a fall planting they had sprouted and grew a little.
then this winter had a freak cold spell 0ºF ect. well that wiped
them out. 2 weeks or so tossed some more seed on plot. do not
see any so tossed some more seed today. will see how it goes.
the fall planting looked good. old mother nature is a bitch...

well i tried a spring planting last spring no luck.
so i got a 1/2 trash can of chicken shit from bro's coop.
i added water and let it cook off spring/early summer.
then i started adding buckets of the water from it to plot.
added water to trash can and kept adding to plot a week or 2.
about out of seed. but collected up some last night. rain today
but stopped just before dark. i went out and roughed up the plot
with a winged weeder and a rake. then tossed on some seed.
the shit water killed most everything in plot is why i did not till.
also shoulder is hurt did not want to pull a rope a bunch to start
tiller. so looks a bit rough. but is planted is a wait and see now.

seems to be no poppy's. thought about it maybe it's
slugs/snails taking them out as they sprout. so tossed
some more seed. then spread some slug bait around.
hope some show up this year.

You can sow them for another month or two and still get flowering plants. Slugs/snails will eat them, but if you throw enough viable seed around, you are almost certain to get a crop in spite of the pests.

well they have not really liked this spot. i added
things this last summer. should be watered in well.
also maybe my seed is getting to old. but many seeds
tossed on there some should have popped. think it's
slugs/snails we have a lot around here. just bought
more slug bait. i spread a bunch around today.

there are a few here and there between weeds. think the
slug bait was it since i see some now. small but got the
cabbage leafs going. took pellet fert's and put around most
i seen and skipped doing whole plot. then got heavy watering
last night. then again tomorrow. they already perked up.
least i should have enough for fresh seed for next year.

last night took the old cutco scissors out to poppy plot.
took a while but cut most the grass and weeds from around
them. lots of snail shells so it was them fucking me over.
today i spread N pellets 1st then some 10-20-20 pellet ferts.
just around them. not whole thing just around the poppys.
will be watered in tonight. looks like enough of them for some
fresh seeds. while cutting weeds last night was thinking like
always. never stops i tell ya lol.. i think this fall since tiller is
going i will till. then thickly plant winter rye. let it go over the
winter, in spring instead of tilling rye in i think i will cut short.
then lay some black plastic on it for a month. then rough up
and plant. that should make it pretty weed free. least i hope.

here in california our ususal snail is of an invasive species here from france

ya, you got it
OUR garden snails ARE the escargo snails straight from i do believe the only nations pushing their culinary use on anyone...

i learned decades ago how to collect and process snails into stove ready protein morsels
id be eating them already IF my gated community didnt have them on a near straight roundup diet.

each morning my walk to the truck offers a Smörgåsbord of snails there for the taking...

looked over plot. overgrown dead weeds. grabbed the 4 tine
rake and it all came out pretty easy. was like nice no need to till.
that was 2 days ago. yesterday i took my winged rooter weeding
tool and did the plot. i then added pellet ferts on top and some
slug bait around. be planting in march. i will go over it weekly
with the weeder until then. kill off any weed sprouts. also going
to spread more slug bait around early to get ahead of them.
i sorted out seeds other day so almost ready to roll.

well fluffed and raked plot. then spread seeds. then i spread
slug bait. had this flashy owl cut out with a bell. i drove a T post
then hung it by a string. light breeze rings the bell. maybe will keep
my bro's cats out. i hope so. so now just a war with slugs ,snails and cats.
i also put a board at bottom of my gate. is how they get into yard.
