I've grown Meconopsis betonicifolia from some seeds I "borrowed" from VanDusen Botanical Garden in Vancouver, who do a great job with it. Not an easy plant to grow, even though the climate here mostly suits it.

Yours are definitely P. somniferums.

well i did not do a seed crop this year. i did last year.
oddly i do not have any in my plot i planted this spring.
i even replanted it but nothing. been a weird weather year.
i will do a fall planting in the plot this fall for next year.
had a bad fire last year between my house and freeway.
it burned all the under brush and lucky me not my house.
anyway i spread seeds down the burned fence line.
i noticed some blooms one day. i will let self seed.
so i do not have any poppys growing this year.

my new plot did not do very well where it is.
so last fall i put a bunch of shit some peat moss
and limed it 4 times.tilled a bunch. then i planted winter rye.
it grew well, i should have taken photo of mini lawn.
had some sun last few days. tiller did not want to start.
got it dealt with. i have tilled plot a few times now.
i will till it a few more times. then got my poppy seeds
ready to go. late but been cold out and to wet to till...

it's poppy planting time of year again.

got a little rain then sun for days. i seen some sprouts.
so i watered them with watering can. later that day seen
nothing. figured shit i fucked them up. tossed a little more seed.
well i had just knocked them down watering. i know better.. "let rain
set the seeds in ground to sprout." so yesterday i notice that one
of my brothers cat's has a compass and transit. pissed or shit in the
very middle of the plot. cat might have a tape measure also lol.
tossed more seed where it had done the deed. today looking
at them pretty sure the poppies took in this spot. the sprouts
are kind of in waves. like pattern i had hand spread the seeds.
3 years they did not like this spot. after all the amending tilling.
then tilling in a cover crop should be good soil.
it is not to late.. plant em if you got them

Somniferums are too picky about soil. I've seen them popping up and flowering in the middle of a nasty gravel driveway.

stray ones grow about anywhere.
had a large cedar tree in yard.
think it had tainted the soil.
the tree is gone now.

some trees do that, right? fending off competition...

curious if they all do it the same way
ok, so i looked it up

the term is Allelopathy

its seems to be accomplished two different ways. one is toxin in dead leaves that get watered in after falling and the other is toxins released by roots

i hear what your saying my friend.

but i think rocks cast the first shadows
and they did it glowing hot

the questions is weather depth exists independent of observer

and worse
how do we honestly know there was no observer

simply because life hadnt evolved yet
