GPS units are navigational instruments that were meant for ships and it replaced the old Loran system. Landlubbers took the technology and applied it to something that wasn't necessary.

I relied on GPS for quite a while before getting radar and it kept us off the rocks many a time. It gets my vote over a compass any day.
