The Universal Mind, The Law of Attraction, and Is Religion More Than Just Crowd Control

Remembering the video series Zeitgeist, I believe it was part 2, the introduced the notion of a Universal Mind.
It's also called the Law of Attraction. It isn't a new concept and has been practiced throughout the ages.
The Collective Conscience.

Did the Priests of early religion know this as part of their practice?
Was religion and mass congregations actually a tool to control the herd's minds and use the many many minds and actions of the members to bring about the desires of the Priests?

The principles of the Law of Attraction rely on the very same doubtless faith of that which is desired, will absolutely manifest.
I see these parallel similarities that perhaps at one time was just a singular belief.

I also wonder if these practices are widely accepted amongst the mass media outlets.
We live in an age where everyone is receiving the same messages in repetition.
I wonder if there is more to that than just influencing our opinions. They have the ability to conjure mass emotional energy through the messages they send to the multitude.
