lime the soil to sweeten it till in. then yes plant winter rye

Well I always turn in lime, dolomite, every year with the steer manure anyways. Don't have the freezing temperatures but maybe a spring tilling anyway. Which is when i'm just tilling in Weeds

The problem with tilling weeds is that you are also tilling in weed seeds. Not a big problem but more work later.

that was a good read oldjoints.
when i had a big garden did rye every fall.
after like 3 years garden was almost all weed free.
i till it in so not weed free 1st year but not many weeds.

Poppies are supremely easy to grow in ordinary garden soil, they should not only thrive but self-sow and come back year after year on their own if you let them.
