>>>Roots, is there a water line going into the coop? yanno so as not to water 'em by hand every day. Also seen people here put a water mister in the coop for the 100F plus days here, i suspect you too get those triple digits temps.

Like I said 99% complete....I’ll add the water line when the last kid moves out or ask to build a waterline, it’s a good chore for a kid who has an easy life....Heat is my primary concern right now.....We go weeks at a time with 105+ temps and sometimes 112+ 3 or 4 straight days.

>>>How did you settle on design?
How many birds will it accomadate?
Any roosters? What breeds did you go with?

I bought a book that some 12 year old girl wrote....The book gave me an idea of materials and the basic needs of a good coop but really I just buried 6 10’ 4x4s and took it from there....I set one corner wrong and was to lazy to fix it, that came into play on virtually everything after.....it was a fun learning experience with the family and I’m very pleased with the results.

I have eight, I’m sure it could hold more, there’s a lot of science in keeping a coop, like loading it with carbon to keep odor down...right now there is no smell at all so I think I’ll keep it at that.

I have four breeds, one rooster.
The rooster is a Turkin
One Silky, it’s not even like a chicken
3 leghorns
3 black ones, wife and kid know the breed.

One of those 55 gallon plastic barrels
With the black screw on lid
Would hold enough air pressure
To run your misters so
An entension cord to an air pump
Or a PV Panel Plus a kid to keep the water up
Would put your new friends in
Comfortable digs

: D

You got an auto-doorswfor them?
the intolerance of the old order is emerging from the rosy mist in which it has hitherto been obscured.

Yeah actually it is good idea to use a barrel to hold the water/pressure rather then rely on a direct water line. then if yer gone and the pipes break or shit happens to water line you only lose the water in the barrel rather then come home day(s) later with a flooded yard and a depletion of yer well or running up a water bill.

a few tips on chickens.
in coop when you spread bedding on ground.
you can use straw but to clean out you need a pitchfork.
you can use pine shavings. to clean out you use a shovel.
i like pine shavings for bedding myself. less work to clean.
add greens to there food. makes eggs yolks dark yellow. who wants
a light yellow fresh chicken egg ? want them damn near orange.
if not much greens to give them, get some alfalfa pellets in with there feed.
only need 1 rooster eat the others while still tender.

my garden is so so this year is a cold summer so far.
potato's are doing great. so is a good year for them.
cheers Lrus007

Thanks for the chicken tips....I think the shaving are better for carbon loading the coop too...There is no smell after about 80+ days outside.

They run free a few hours a day and get to forage so I should get good yolk color.

I’ve planted a bunch of trees and cactus this year but no veggie garden....I have plans for making beds next year.
