Gimme the Good Earth III

After enjoying the fruits of your labors, we all need a place to chill. This is that place. Totally senseless irrelevant banter encouraged.

Into Sierra City and my 6th re-supply.
Good times in Sierra City, The local grill had a one pound burger called the gut-buster served with hand breaded onion rigs, Holy shit it was good! Almost every PCT hiker orders one. A decent snack for hungry hungry hikers.

I've really been in Jefferson State, not California.
SierraCity 09.JPG
A treat, real live music, The Public String Band. Folk and blue grass, they jammed tight and played all the right songs. Damn good times.
SierraCity 10.JPG
The Red Moose café.

Spent the night at the local church's yard for free ..
SierraCity 12.JPG
with two completely awesome hikers, Ann and Die-hard. Thru hiking to Canada. Die-hard on the right is British med student taking time off before her residency. Both soloing but hooked up while on the trail, Behind schedule yet full of smiles. I luv 'em both!

An unexpected treat for me is the truly awesome people I meet the trail.

Brief respite into civilization was fun.
Sister-in-law sent some cookies the kids bake. Sweet, it's nice being though of.
With no pay phones and my ATT connection worthless, had to borrow Die Hard's Verison phone to check in with my bro, let him know I'm here and OK and mail the next supply package.
Still no court date yet for the fucking bear canister. Sheesh it's been 30 days and nothing.
Ben, you asked if there was hot spots, well Sierra City's store had one fwiw. first one i noticed. tho it didn't do me any good.

Packing it up.
Snowbank Spr 00.JPG
The next 4 days the trail stayed up high on the ridge. Blue skies, inspiring views, cold spring water and a beautiful wilderness trail. I'm a happy camper.

DonnerPass 00.JPG
After walking up a small hill for views, also got a cell phone connection, probably from Truckee town. checked in with my bro and I have that bear cannister court date 21 days from now. Fuck. My initial calculation gives me 10 days to Echo summit (hwy 50), best place to leave and come back. I can stretch it out to 14 days or more giving me a week to comfortably hitchhike to Reading or at least get to Sac and then the Amtrack with my senior discount.
Damn I was expecting it, but a court date is always a kick in the nuts. With a little luck tho I'll only lose 6-8 days off the trail maybe more, fuking pigs.

Ahh well, next day the views soothed my soul. And got on with really matters, takin care of business.

Damn, the beautiful views just keep on coming. I can't even imagine what it was like to actually be there and see all this.

Stephen 01.JPG

Meet Stephen and his dog Susie Q while near Donner Pass. He too was south bound. From Oregon to the Sierras where he's planning to peel off at Mammoth town and to scatter he wife's ashes in Death Valley, where they married.

Stephen 03.JPG
Stephen was old school, the antithesis of lightweight hiking, more so then me,
Still did all his cooking on a fire. With a lot of tall tales, it was great for around the campfire.

On the trail with Stephen and Susie Q. we hiked together for a couple of days.

He split the next day to drop down to North Lake Tahoe for supplies.
And was I back on the trail by myself again.

Made it to Tahoe on Day 65, August 26. 2 months on the trail and now I can't imagine ever doing anything else.

Mourning camp. Started to set up the tent again, first time in 3 weeks; cooler temps, higher altitude.

Took the Rubicon Jeep trail down into Tahoe for my 7th resupply. Had no idea what I was getting into, I expected an overgrown two track. But it's a maintained jeep road, international known where several races and events held by a variety of groups going on all year, plus all the local traffic on the weekends. I never heard of it before this.
Tahoe 09.JPG
Jack, A local and jes too cool. I meet him on his way in, chatted for a long time, a math and nature freak also. When he came back later he gave me a short ride though the worst of the thrashed road, with hordes of 4 wheelers all over the place. I weren't looking for a ride but Jack knew it was going get worse for me down the trail and after I saw what I avoided, boy I was grateful, what a zoo! He left me off at this out-of-way hidden spring he explored as kid, good water and camp. Also left me with 3 different locally brewed beers and a shitload of snacks. Which was more then cool, since he didn't even know I was out of food anyways (I had one oatmeal packet and some hot sauce left).

Then down into Tahoe Lake. 5 miles of walking along the lake and this was the closest to the lake I could see, it was all private houses, resorts and marinas.
Tahoe 10.JPG
Trespassed to get this pic, touch the water, skipped some stones…
Tahoe 11.JPG
Tahoe City, burgers, shower, laundry, pizza and bananas, spent the night and even logged on to MPG from the library.. if anyone remembers my post.

Eventually satiated and back on the trail into Desolation Wilderness.
