Gimme the Good Earth III
Filled up with water at Cedar Spring, a little trashed from the cows but still the best water around.
Then a male black bear sauntered by, didn't even glance at me. I felt slighted. The 4th bear sighting so far.
I suspect there was an unmarked spring somewhere nearby.
Yet another Butterfly and Mint. Redbud seed pods.
Continued on the old Lassen emigrant trail into the Ishi Wilderness.
Looking back north over Mill creek canyon and thunderheads obscuring Mt. Lassen. Big mountains generate their own weather.
Made good time and camped early. More oaks then pines now.
Had some wildlife visit in the evening. First a skunk wandered by curious, GO AWAY!Then a male black bear sauntered by, didn't even glance at me. I felt slighted. The 4th bear sighting so far.

Gimme the Good Earth III
Day 32, July 24
Left Lassen trail in the mourning, 6 miles on a dry ridge. Since I carried water to camp yesterday , today my left over water is at a premium, and it 98F and only 10 am. Whew! I was warned not hike here in July or August.
Looking west to the Central Valley, a bit hazy. Deer creek canyon in the distance, next water. A lot of open ridge walking to do yet. Feels like hiking in southern cali; scrubby, hot, dry, full of ticks and poison oak. I'm Home. Getting closer to deer creek. The 'trail' was scrubby in places but follow-able. It's major users apparently are bear. I have a dozen more scat pics from today alone. Lots of manzanita seeds in his/her diet. Cool rocks and volcanic hoodoos

Mother-of-god! I made to Deer Creek, ya betcha I jumped in right away. Never going to leave. Yay Baby, Life's sweet.
More of a river then creek. Lots of fish. I'm in the heart of the state game refuge and the Ishi Wilderness. Somewhere around here is the Yani's and Ishi's last cave he lived in. The cave is kept secret from being raided for artifacts.
Soaring cliffs lining the creek. I see now how the Yani stayed hidden for so long, this is some real tough country to move around in. Chingas! Glad I had a trail here.
The Deer Creek trail. Elevation is low at 1400 feet.
Clematis or Virgin's Bower
Poison Oak
And real Oak.

My mother had a book, "Ishi, Last of His Tribe" I read as just a kid. Amazing tale. The country looks amazing. Deer Creek, wow. I am envious.

Spent 3 nights on deer creek. a day and half just day hiking and expoloring. 100F plus weather and by afternoon it was back to camp, naked, high and hanging in the creek. Missing my Kindle, read that paperback, 'Wanted:cowboy' at least 16 times, following Barbra and Cade's steamy romance.
But I have plenty of ganja. Hard country, back tracked more then once finding myself looking over another basalt cliff.
No Fuckin Country for Old Men!
Never made to the top of a Pinery, a unique feature only found here.

View from lying around in camp. Last of the blue blue skies. Woke up to this: Very smoky skies, blotting out the sun. There is a fire somewhere, I know not where at this time. So much smoke I fear it is in Deer canyon. Shit! Time to move on. The last mile of the deer creek trail as I head out of the of wilderness to the dirt road, I Haven't seen anybody for 5 days now. At least there are no fire crews rushing in or helicopters, that's a good thing I suppose.
The Deer Creek bridge crossing and then a couple thousand feet of hot dry climbing on a dirt road, packing all my water with me

While i was coming out of Deer Creek I meet this yahoo backpacking down to spend 4 nights to escape the heat and smoke. First person in 5 days.
Learned the fire is a Huge one in the Reading-Shasta area still 100% uncontained. Looks like smoke for me for at least a week.
Up to the main logging road and private land for next two days. With a few places briefly on National Forest land and still virgin. The rest logged with less shade and thus hotter. Its still pushing 100F temps in the afternoon even tho I'm up to 4000 feet.
Smokey views. Looking across deer Creek canyon cannot even see the other side.
For being obviously out of shape he had been all around the Ishi and Mill creek area before. Turned out to be a cool and interesting dude, a Great source of info.Learned the fire is a Huge one in the Reading-Shasta area still 100% uncontained. Looks like smoke for me for at least a week.

Two very cool dudes motoring on the closed road. Most often meeting motorcyclist in the backcountry never goes well. But they were real cool and were there for the same reason as me.
Crossed highway 32 and followed Big Chico Creek for a mile. Sweet as Sin after being on the dry ridge for the last two days.
Then it was climbing up on an old dirt road, which turned out long abandoned and overgrown, which quickly turned into yet another unplanned cross country. Doesn't look like I'll make Butte Meadows this mourning after all.
12 days since last supply, I'm a little lost, foods gone … and loving it!- Jesús Malverde
