Gimme the Good Earth III

After enjoying the fruits of your labors, we all need a place to chill. This is that place. Totally senseless irrelevant banter encouraged.

cool cool lava tubes!!!
hiked a few in Idaho,
will be sure to make it by those sometime

we know they are extensive and gigantic on the moon and mars and suscessful human presense on them will hinge on building habitations inside them

the last rattler I came across was less than 20 inches away from me when it decided to rattle

turns out there are different species which have different level of stress they will tolerate before they start rattling and because of this the noiser ones who rattle first have been the ones we have killed most of the time and thus their distinct species is more in duress than the quiet chill ones...

Days 5,6,7
Left the Subway and Hit the trail fast and hard, Picked 'em up and put 'em down. Made it To JJ's café in record time.
Just to hang with some PCT thru-hikers, sucking down some drafts on a 95f degree hot afternoon. JJ's had real fresh beef hamburgers. They serve fresh ground and half-pound juicy hand patted never frozen burgers, from the cows raised in here in Hat valley. I had two.
Day6 1.JPG
Day6 2.JPG
Notice the thru hikers are always on the outside, we stink from days-weeks without a hot shower.
Next day I hit the Old Station post office, got a shower  and some fresh supplies.
Day6 3.JPG

The postmistress and boxes of PCTers supplies waiting to be picked up. I got mine, packed up and left that afternoon.

Day6 5.JPG
Hiked only two miles down the trail with a full heavy pack, 11 days of food, and my shoulder strap broke, ripped the metal apart. It's been well used and this heavy load did it in.
Made camp and repairs. All's good.

Day6 sign.JPG
A lot of backcountry rules but notice the sign does NOT say anything about bear canisters required in Lassen Park.

What is a bear canister? Besides being extra weight jes to satisfy the non-hiking bureaucrats.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Bear-resi ... _container" onclick="window.open(this.href);return false;

Having hiked successfully for decades keeping bears and all animals from my food, it does nothing for me, it is just extra weight. OK now I'm starting to preach and getting head of the story…

hey i passed through Lassen boy scout camp in butte meadows. Maybe you been there.
the director, Ren, was real cool, gave me hot shower, use of phone, lunch and xtra food to take with me.
:gadday:
Of coarse that was next to Paradise town which burned to ground this year, made national news, i haven't check to see how Butte Meadows fared since.

Nope, no ipad, don't even own one. I started with an ipod but it broke on the trip :frown: Used the phone for music afterwards.
well my phone account was not set for internet connection, so no noticing at all. :winky:

but I had ATT service and got very little phone connection on the trail and sometimes not not even in town. Those with Verizon did much better. I was interested in staying disconnected as much as possible. certainly no social media BS stuff. Jes to connect with my support team (my brother and niece) charge of my package mailings.
Maybe next time i'll try the PG app

Day 7,8
Entered Lassen Park and immediately left the PCT-trail for my own route.
Day8 1.JPG
The first mile was ok, scenic even.
Day8 2.JPG
Then enter a burned out area. While it held it's own beauty, nevertheless it was a depressing and dangerous place with all dead trees still falling. Not the place to stop for camp.
Day8 3.JPG
Day8 5.JPG
Climbed up into the green forest.
