how many lb's of castings are you harvesting a month lrus?

how many lb's of raw material do you need to feed it for that production?

worm bin

Post by Lrus007 »

well i add bedding to a new tray until full. then i wait a week.
after that i feed one time a week for 5 weeks. after that
i fill that tray to top again and repeat for the 5 weeks.
then i harvest the bottom bin. i get a packed 5 gal bucket
from each of them. i then take empty tray put on top and repeat.
so 10 gal of castings every 22 weeks with 2 bins.
i would guess 10 gal of bedding to make 5 gal of castings.
on the feeding i feed on each corner 1/4 then on 5th week the
center. my bedding is 1/3 shade leafs 1/3 shredded paper and
1/3 peat. the peat i mix with some lime and wet down and let it
sit for month or 2. the dry shade leafs i wet overnight same with paper.
then mix well let sit overnight and then add to bin tray.
then i feed them with worm chow i would guess 3/4 cup.
guess that's about it.
thanks for looking

you said you've kept this up
has your number of trays running corresponded with the amount of appropriate refuse your kitchen generates?

how many running trays gets you how much castings a year?

the worms get worm chow.

Hey Lrus007

Are you still Worm Binning? I am going to make some bins this weekend :toker1:

I want to use either 30 gall trashcans or those tote style bins... Not sure yet..

buy a worm bin like i showed at 1st posts of thread.
sorting worms suck. i tried bins and such before. lot of
work and had to sort out the worms. with these stacking bins
the bottom is almost void of worms. is all castings. worth the
price of the bins. i need to harvest my bins. been lazy and
got plenty of castings right now.

worm bin

Post by Lrus007 »

got a 30 gal tub i been putting used soil into.
last spring added some worms and been feeding them.
was a lot of worms going in there. well a few days ago
i noticed it is all dug into. figured a salamander or something.
i put 2 pieces of styrofoam board on there and a old heavy fan.
was ok the next day. well i go in there last night and it had bit
little 1/8" or so pieces out and made a hole. raided worms again.
lost a lot of worms bin is 3-4" shallower. i looked around and came
up with some 1/8" heavy screen. tried to cut with wire cutters
but was hard to get tip between mesh. out came the cutco scissors.
cut a piece and folded it all around the bin. then set the foam board
back on and the fan. today i took a look. is smaller than 1/8" pieces
all over looked like a beanbag chair spill. had tunneled under the
whole foam board. in a few places quite the mess. but did not get
thru screen. so worms were ok today. got a mess to clean up but
i think the screen will work. 1 got a 2nd bin i was going to fill when
i need it. i think the 2nd cut off piece of screen will fit onto it.
took a year to get that many worms going in there so really sucked.

only seen a couple salamanders ever,
sounds like a mouse but wouldnt think of them going for worms
the intolerance of the old order is emerging from the rosy mist in which it has hitherto been obscured.

i cleaned up kind of. tiny pieces of foam filled a coffee can 2 times.
then put foam board to the side. dug up 3 bungy cords there holding
the screen down now. a heavy little fan set on the screen also.
it's it's move now. but hope this is it . i am older now so not doing it.
but came to mind to tie a leader to a treble hook and thread worms
onto it and tie off. then face the thief...
