Reviving old seeds.

Post by Dick Fein »

These guys have a very interesting technique for germinating old seeds.
I have always said, never throw anything away.

Fifty-fucking-bucks! For a couple of drops of H2O2, sugar, RO water and some tweezers . . . Yeah, nah.

Rip-off shit aside, wish I'd known that technique 10-15 years ago. I remember bumping into an old girlfriend in Hong Kong back in 2003 and she'd kept a souvenir of our time together - a film canister full of old landrace seeds from bud I'd smoked and brought back from a trip through Thailand, Vietnam and Cambodia in 1991. She gave them to me as a wedding gift and I promptly posted them off to Luc at Paradise Seeds.

They were the real deal, too, including seeds from Koh Chang Island, Bangkok's finest, the Phnom Penh weed market and Saigon before the embargo was lifted. What a fucking trip! I smuggled a quarter pound back to Hong Kong and it lasted us a good couple of months.

Not one of those seeds I sent to Luc ever germinated :frown:

I have learned to use a teaspoon of Hydrogen peroxide in a glass of water. Put seeds in soak over night. Plant. Did all the wet napkin ... wait till they germ... TEDIOUS

Soak 'em and plant them.

Less you mess with them and let nature takes its course the better.

I'm testing some seeds now from Burmese that may or may not have dried properly.

I made one of these:
Take an old mayonaise jar and punch a hole in the top a little bit bigger than an aquarium bubbler hose, and run one through it, silicone all around hose on both sides and allow to dry overnight. Now put a little bubbler air blower in it with a stone on end. Now fill with water and 10 drops of superthrive or similar concentrated b1 solution. Next use 10 drops of DMSO per 8 oz.'s of water, float old seeds on top and screw lid on tight, run motor [aquarium air pump] for 24-48 hours to build a little pressure to imbibe fluid in seeds then place on 90 degree F wet dirt and they will usually get a good percentage of those with a spark left in them, let stay at that temp for 3-4 weeks in dirt as some may be slow to respond. You should be able to get DMSO from a pharmacy. And personally I like to add a little sugar water as old seed loses it's carbohydrates over time. If you cannot find B1, a kelp based mixture will work as well."

I believe it's Tucks germination bomb, maybe.
It worked for me with some seeds that was very old.
