sailors like stable wind that arent to strong,
high winds are a nightmare

theyre blustery and directions changing

your constantly having the adjust your sails
as winds pick up you "reef" your sails

that is, you drop them partially
they have cords sewed to them to tie that portion to the boom so you have less sq. footage that the wind can affect

some boats carry multiple sails for each location
small medium and large effectively
each for differing wind conditions

not to mention the swells rise up significantly as the wind get raging

i recall several occasions
accompanioning a boat owner out of the harbor

tough conditions,
but they wanted to try all the same

you have to beat straight into the wind most often
if you take the short way out of the break waters

then your motors running
as you beat up and down the swells
your propeller out of the water half of the time

in a small boat
your then faced with having to turn 180 and run back in
your a fool for ever getting out here

and you wait for a longest break in the swells to make the turn

invariably
your on the highside bank of a swell as you come about

quite bracing!
