The best ones are air cooled!
Yep, I've swapped my Supernova reflectors for the air cooled versions
With the summer on the way, and temps in the tent getting on for the mid 30s, I decided now was the time to splash out on some cool new reflectors.
Temps are down by about 8 degrees, and I'm very pleased with the performance of the reflectors... just like the old ones, but I can get them to within inches of the plant tops.
The duct routing isn't ideal, but it's working well... I may do some reconfiguring later, but I've also got some activated carbon on the way to refill my filter, so it can wait 'till that's done.
I also have some bungee cord on order to support the ducting a bit better.

I should probably do the same thing, except that it's been very cool here this spring and temps haven't been a problem. Plus I'm a cheap bastard.

I can now work in the tent without sweating my arse off.dill786 wrote:wow !!
down by 8 degrees , impressive !!
If I swap the lamps round so that the ducting has a shorter route (i.e. the "u bend" is at the other end of the tent) I think it might drop a degree or so more.
I also had to use 5" ducting rather than 6" for the final few metres to the vent (didn't order enough 6" duct ) and the lamps do blow a little of the warm air out around the glass.. if I can fix that and shorten the duct, (and improve the airflow through the filter with new carbon and a new sleeve) I think I can survive high summer.

Are you pulling outside air through the lamps, and then through the filter? And is that a Secret Jardin tent?

No, it's a BudBox.
The air route is:
filter >> fan >> lamp >> lamp >> outside vent
So the air is being pulled from inside the tent. I could probably drop the temperature even more by using outside air, but then I'd need another big hole in the wall as well as having the problem of keeping insects and other crap out of the system.
As it is, there's a bit of positive feedback.. as the temperature of the tent rises, so does the inlet temperature of the cooling air, but it's steadying out at around 26C at the moment, which is good enough.
The inlet is passive... it's an 8" duct connected between my mother/clone tent (cheap e-Bay item) and the main tent.
It's an 8" fan and filter with an 8" to 6" reducer on the outlet to match the ducting.
There's a 6" to 5" reducer just before it disappears out of the tent roof to match the last bit of duct.

Nice engineering!
How about some pics of the carbon changing, where do you get your carbon from?

More assembly than engineering, but thanks.Intrinsic wrote:Nice engineering!

The carbon is coming from a lab supply company. They buy it in tonne lots for their own use and sell a bit on via e-Bay.
I was a bit unsure about whether the stuff sold for "aquarium" use was the same as "air purification" stuff, but the guy was very helpful when I contacted him and sent data sheets on all the active carbon they have and advice on which would be best for refilling a filter.
(apparently there's no difference in "aquarium" and "air" carbon, but filters tend to use pelleted rather than granulated)
He said for their fume hood, they just "chuck in a mixture of whatever they've got" :D
I'll see what I can do about pix of the refilling.
