cooking dirt

Post by Munchy »

i'm trying to start some 12-year old romulan x kush seeds,
and i really don't want any soil bugs munchin on the roots.
i lined a turkey pan with tin foil, filled it with fresh supersoil, and put the lid on.
is 300f for 30 mins really sufficient to sterilize soil?
how about 420f for an hour... would that be overkill?
i hope not... it's already started.
i just can't wait to see how bad it'll stink the house up.
this seemed like a good time, it should be done by 4:20am. :toker1:

i was trying to avoid using a regular search engine for this,
but i went ahead anyway, and found directions to use a meat thermometer to make sure the soil gets between 180-200f for 30 mins.

so i just checked it, & the soil's temp is nearly 200f,
so i turned the oven down to 180f.

ok i turned off the oven & pulled the pan out, checked the soil temp at about 200f still, then i put it out in the garage, and lit a couple more sticks of incense real quick before my wife gets up.

anyway, i scarified my beans 2 nights ago, scraped the white ridges off with a razor blade tool that is. soaked them in 80f spring water overnight, all of them sank when tapped after about 12 hours. had some damp paper towels all warmed up, and at about 24 hours in there, i just checked them, and none have begun to pop yet. :smoke:

You'd probably have been better served just using a sterile soilless medium, then planting them into a good soil. Soil cannot effectively function as a growing medium without healthy microbiota. Germinating directly in good soil they can grow in for at least a few weeks prior to transplantation is probably best of all.
