Astilbe

Thanks Old Joints, but it's not for a couple of reasons. I'm certain my plant is native and Astilbe is Asian. And mine is woody with alternate leaves and Astilbe is mostly herbaceous with basil leaves. Yet it got me on the right track.

... cause it was listed as sometimes called Spirea.

I couldn't find either name in my Munz ("A California Flora", the definitive work).
Since I had the Munz out I tried to key it out with just a pic. I have loads of picture books but it wasn't in any of 'em.

I came up with: Spiraea Douglasii.
Confirmed when i got to the Internet today.
Dang close to Spirea, a likely common alternate spelling.
Which would jive with Haysus's begins with "S".
Once I got it firmly placed in the Rose family it was trivial. What looks like 4 styles must really be 4 stigmas. The 5 petals and numerous stamens should have clued me in.
The leafs only toothed on the upper part helped cinched it.

Dang purty

From the top around Spanish peak I left the PCT for a couple of days to pass through the Sliver lake Basin and a small town of Meadow Valley. The lake basin was hot but there wasn't much in town, a post office and a small country school. No bar, no deli, no store, but a pay phone (no court date yet) Silver lake Gold lake Gold and silver lake and trail down. All in beautiful granite!

Then the road into town Spanish peak and blue blue skies. The smokes all gone. I'm a happy camper. Country schoolhouse

Passed Bucks Lake and then back on the PCT.
Lookout rock Yet another Mule Deer Bear Creak Dropped down 3000 feet to cross the Middle Fork of the Feather River The foot bridge and the beautiful marble rock gorge.

Climbing back up on a marble lined trail. Back up on the ridge and the Central Valley still shrouded deep in smoke the Reading Fire. I'm mostly out of it. Cedar spring. The trail would alternate between cool shady forest to open vistas. Sweeeeet!

'Flamin': 2 ½ months from the Mexican border, a little behind schedule but in great spirits and having a awesome time. I really hit it off with flamin, very envious of his hike. Too cool.
