Gimme the Good Earth III
My hike is only on the PCT less the half of the time, and as i said earlier i'm winding around the Lassen Park to see everything. See map on page one.
tongue-in-cheek i say the PCT is following my trail, in my way, not the other way around. I'll cross the PCT twice in the park whilst winding around, but i won't be on the PCT till 30 odd days later , all of July, after Ishi Wilderness and Butte Meadows.
And yes, as you exclaimed, that is part of why the deviation, taken the path least followed. making all the difference. to paraphrase Robert Frost.
Also this is the way to the top of Lassen peak, the pct doesn't go that way.

I’ve been there, my daughter is going to Butte & Chico State this semester, I live less than two hours from Butte, but that’s not where that reminds me of. There’s a camp called Silverrodo Lodge it’s near Silver Lake and Thunder Mountain it’s basically on the back side of Kirkwood.hey i passed through Lassen boy scout camp in butte meadows. Maybe you been there.
the director, Ren, was real cool, gave me hot shower, use of phone, lunch and xtra food to take with me.
Of coarse that was next to Paradise town which burned to ground this year, made national news, i haven't check to see how Butte Meadows fared since.

Day 10
July 2, Fourth-of-July weekend.
Next day I hiked 2 miles along a beautiful cross-country to the Lassen Peak trail.
Lassen and what a gorgeous day!! The Nice tourist trail to the top.
Brokeoff mountain, I will eventually climb the up the back side of it later in the trip, then down the tourist trail. Brokeoff from higher up, Lake Helen to the left Volcanic Rock Brokeoff from the top and Lake Almanor in the distance
View north from the top of half the state and Shasta peak way off in the distance. Near the top an evening primrose, a rocky cute little high elevation one.

Yet another view of Brokeoff Mnt.
Next up the invasion of thousand and thousand of migrating Tortoiseshell butterflies flowing over the top. Magical and spiritual.

Yes, the lodge is about a mile hike from Silver Lake, this time of year it’s probably vacant. After you get to the lodge it’s about a three mile hike to Granite Lake. 30 years ago I was climbing rocks at Granite Lake and was about 40 feet above flat ground and I refused to climb down, I finally found my balls about 10 minutes before it got dark, the adults were about to go hike back and get a rescue team....still have bad dreams about that.

Top of Lassen Mountain
The Tortoiseshell butterfly migrates, much as the monarch butterfly does. Takes generations to keep the population migrating north, stopping and breeding along the way for the next generation to continue north. Never ending. It would seem impossible to evolve this way over generations.
They use the updrafts of Laseen peak to help gain altitude to gain distance. Looking down one of the windy chutes the butterflies are propelled up through A spiritual feeling letting the river of butterflies flow around me.

And There was quite a crowd on top being fourth of July weekend.
Heading back down,
It is impossible for me to describe the euphoria of the day, everyone there noticed the special day this was. To share with others was a blessing. I just don't have the word skills to express it, I'm sorry. Now ben or mmm here can really push an adverb against a noun with meaning and aplomb, but not me.- Intrinsic

Days 11,12
Next day had to hike 2 miles of the paved road. At least awesome blue skies.
Looking back at the mountain. Good times Back on trail and into the heart of Lassen National Park wilderness. Sucking down some good spring water. Lupine flowers lining the trail Yet more wildflowers. Horseshoe lake Backcountry Ranger station near Horseshoe. Tho there was a flag flying there was no one there. I hung out and ate an earlier lunch waiting for the ranger to show up to ask bear canister situation here. But no one showed up. This was the second ranger station I stopped at and no one there, as much as a ranger.
I felt I did my due diligence and moved on ..

Moving on…
I preemptively swapped batteries every other day. The charge would last 3-4 days but this way I never had the to change the battery while in the middle of taking pictures. Dropping the pack to swap camera batteries sucks. Usually only an hour charging on the trail was all that was needed for another solid 2 days of photography. On a sunny day all the electronic was always fully charged before camp; The ipod, phone, headlamp, camera, steripen, kindle and a battery bank (for literally raining days). Jes to sweet!
And I luv getting high and taking pics Mimulus, aka monkey flower.
