View north were I'm going, Lassen peak.
Looking south whence I came
A trail register. Signed in and Left a spice jar (red cap) of weed.
Yet another pic of gorgeous Lassen Peak. Getting closer.- Jesús Malverde

This report is awesome, and the start was very different than anything you've posted before. Very different, but I was getting sore feet walking around the often cobblestoned streets of London for maybe 10 miles a day last week and just took it easier for a day walked through them and they became callous very quickly. And I'm a guy who walks a lot, but usually on unpaved surfaces. Cobblestones are like walking a rocky trail, even if your feet are used to miles, they'll still have to adjust to the different surface.
Did you take any water filtration or treatment stuff? Seeing you fill up at that Cornaz spring, had me worried you'd get some intestinal bug and have to delay or cancel. Although I suspect that like feet with callouses, our guts could eventually adapt to any reasonable water that local animals can drink without getting ill. But I suspect there might be some gut drama before you got to that point.

Thanks haysus, I started with a rechargeable Steripen, it uses UV light to kill the bio-nasties. I'd used UV in school to sterilize soils for plant growth experiments and know it is very effective.
But ... i didn't use it at Cornaz spring, and only used it once ( and likely didn't need it) before sending it home after a couple of weeks. Mostly i use technique, i don't drink from source that people been swimming or washing in. such as lakes popular campgrounds creeks. I always try to take water from a source with no human or cattle influence from above. And as you suggested, I appear to be immune to giardia, at least i have never or any in my family has had it. Although i have had "Montezuma revenge" in Baja Norte Mexico when hiking the desert ridge there.
Not to be cavalier about it, i just stay aware of my sources,
Since Cornaz was rarely visited by people, and people are THE main source of the virus and protozoa that containment drinking water, I deemed it a good risk.
That said I also carry iodine tablets for emergencies. never used them. I did get sick once this trip, but that was from the biscuit and country gravy breakfast i got at Kennedy Meadows Retorts. Likely the gravy was yesterdays and just reheated and not brought to proper temperature.

The Subway, A lava cave. Formed when the inner hot lava kept flowing as the outer skin cooled leaving a empty tube underground. And when a section of roof collapses and a cave is born.
Kat entering the subway cave in her bright yellow dress, she's a rock climber I meet there. Life's good.
The cave: Exiting on the other end, the cave runs about a half-kilometer. I fully recommend smoking a bowl before entering.

cool cool lava tubes!!!
hiked a few in Idaho,
will be sure to make it by those sometime
we know they are extensive and gigantic on the moon and mars and suscessful human presense on them will hinge on building habitations inside them
the last rattler I came across was less than 20 inches away from me when it decided to rattle
turns out there are different species which have different level of stress they will tolerate before they start rattling and because of this the noiser ones who rattle first have been the ones we have killed most of the time and thus their distinct species is more in duress than the quiet chill ones...

Days 5,6,7
Left the Subway and Hit the trail fast and hard, Picked 'em up and put 'em down. Made it To JJ's café in record time.
Just to hang with some PCT thru-hikers, sucking down some drafts on a 95f degree hot afternoon. JJ's had real fresh beef hamburgers. They serve fresh ground and half-pound juicy hand patted never frozen burgers, from the cows raised in here in Hat valley. I had two. Notice the thru hikers are always on the outside, we stink from days-weeks without a hot shower.
Next day I hit the Old Station post office, got a shower and some fresh supplies.
The postmistress and boxes of PCTers supplies waiting to be picked up. I got mine, packed up and left that afternoon.
Hiked only two miles down the trail with a full heavy pack, 11 days of food, and my shoulder strap broke, ripped the metal apart. It's been well used and this heavy load did it in.
Made camp and repairs. All's good.
. View of Mt Lassen and Hat Creek near camp

Scenery next day
Exposed basalt flows. Mt Lassen. California Tortoiseshell butterfly; A harbinger of the river of butterflies on top of Mt Lassen. Entered an old burned area and stated to gain elevation. Entering Lassen National Park A lot of backcountry rules but notice the sign does NOT say anything about bear canisters required in Lassen Park.
What is a bear canister? Besides being extra weight jes to satisfy the non-hiking bureaucrats.

Having hiked successfully for decades keeping bears and all animals from my food, it does nothing for me, it is just extra weight. OK now I'm starting to preach and getting head of the story…
