Yeah Kings meadow was Paradise. Gorgeous! This is why I like hiking without a strict schedule, taking xtra time in these cool spots, which I surely did.

Fortuitousness a couple of day hikers came down the trail from Bumpass Hell. No work was being done, no work crews, place was empty and awesome, encouraged me to go on. So I did.

Passed cold boiling Lake, not warm at all, just some gases bubbling on one end of the shallow lake. Dang Pretty tho.
Cool trail, Cool rock, Coool views, Cool flowers and bugs Brokeoff Mountain, which I'll be coming up the backside cross-country in a few days. Mariposa Lily with a blue-green iridescence beetle. Then Bumpass Hell. Awesome! Outrageous! A geyser, boiling pools, mud pots and steam everywhere. With a cold spring near by and no one around from the closure, it was a no brainier to make camp.
The trail out to Bumpass was scenic as hell. Bumpass Hell and my camp off to the right amongst the evergreens.
Now whenever I listen to Pentatonics' song: "No" I hear me telling the bear: "NO, ya need to let it go, ya need to let it go".
my food is NO
my camp is NO
my handouts is NO
Ya need to GO, ya need to GO
The Geyser, unfortunately it just wouldn't pop while I had the camera out. Named after the discoverer K.V. Bumpass, the dude lost his leg in one of the boiling mud pots. Fucking eh! Still not sure if it was pronounced Bump-ass or Bum-pass.
Next day woke up to steam billowing over the trees.
Camp next to a sweet cold spring. A large momma bear and cutest little bear cub came wandering in camp looking for a handout, encouraging her cute little cub to come forward even tho he was obviously nervous about me. the mom was too confident for my taste, so after some firm NO's and GO's, she finally gave up. No problem in the end but got my adrenaline up. fwiw a bear canister would have made no difference whatsoever. Now whenever I listen to Pentatonics' song: "No" I hear me telling the bear: "NO, ya need to let it go, ya need to let it go".

Finishing the closed trail, beautiful and all to myself, A lot of clouds today .. hmmmm
Crossed the highway at Helen lake, looking at my route across the lake, cross county over the pass between Eagle peak (left) and Lassen (right). Almost to the top Views from the top
North, Manazinta lake in the middle and hazy Mt Shasta behind cloud cover. Diller peak and Mt Brokeoff again -- from the other side.

More video, more shit, but less hearing me babble:
Had to set the tent for the fist time from a little rain at sunset. But at least no real storm.
But real Bad news, fuckin bad news.
I broke my Kindle ebook. Damn. Knocked it against a rock. I climbed up high on the mountain and miraculously got a cell phone connection, it would drop out after a couple of minuets but I left a voice mail to my bro to buy me another kindle. Damn! 2-3 weeks before I get it tho. Oh well I rationalized maybe I've been spending too much time with my nose in a book amongst this awesome scenery anyway. Pic of the working kindle and happier days. Pic taken just a few of days ago in Caribou.

The route continued down, keeping an eye on the thunderheads
Tiger Lily Monkshood or Wolfsbane - poisonous. Mint - delicious the route first turned into a old jeep trail Then into a dirt road then into a gravel Forest Service road, 15 odd mile of this.
Going got rougher, thicker forest, more downfall … didn't keep me from stopping to smell the flowers tho.Tiger Lily Monkshood or Wolfsbane - poisonous. Mint - delicious the route first turned into a old jeep trail Then into a dirt road then into a gravel Forest Service road, 15 odd mile of this.
