hows your Ramadan going dill???

After enjoying the fruits of your labors, we all need a place to chill. This is that place. Totally senseless irrelevant banter encouraged.

hows your Ramadan going dill???

Post by bentech »

the muslim religion and tradition developed relatively close to the equator. this meant that the daytime hours rarely exceeded 14 hours
so the time a devotee spent fasting and abstaining from water was
manageable

there is a move to make the tradition manageable in more extreme lattitudes where daytime hours can run all the way up to months on end...

'How Muslims Observe Ramadan in Areas Where the Sun Never Sets'

During the holy month of Ramadan, Muslims typically fast from sunrise to sunset -- with fasting lengths varying depending on where you live.

But for Muslims who live in the land of the "Midnight Sun," a small region north of the Arctic Circle where the sun remains visible at midnight or all day, fasting can be particularly challenging, says Muhammad Asif Mirza. Mirza, vice-chair at the Islamic Center in Yellowknife in Canada.

"We're currently experiencing 24/7 sunlight until mid-August," Mirza told ABC News today. "So, according to Muslim scholars, we have two options in this scenario. You can either follow the times of sunrise and sunset of the closest biggest city to you or follow the time of Mecca, which is in Saudi Arabia."

Mirza said he and his family are currently following the sunrise and sunset times of Edmonton, the capital of the province Alberta in Canada.

"There, Muslims are fasting from 2:56 a.m. until 10:08 p.m., which is a fasting time of about 19 hours and 15 minutes," he said. "It's a little longer than Mecca's fasting time, which is 14 hours."

Mirza added that this year is a particularly difficult year because Ramadan fell on the summer solstice.

"I used to live in Sweden when I was younger, and summer and winter are also different there," he said. "When I was there, Ramadan fell during winter, so I only had a four- to five-hour fasting time."

But Mirza says that he doesn't mind the longer fasting time.

"As with any religion or any belief, there are certain things you must follow," he said, "and if your faith is strong, you can do it."

fasting 19 hours a day is easy...
it's something I just normally do every day of the year.
My single daily meal is usually around 1am. :smoke:

yes, the fasting is do-able
not drinking water for the same amount of time however strikes me as definitively detrimental and dangerous

The restrictions for Ramadan are never meant to override concerns for health and safety.

it may not have been MEANT to, but following the convention of ramadan by a manuel laborer is NOTHING but a threat to health and safety first and foremost

and not just the devotee, but their co-workers and others around them whos safety is threatened by these people stumbling through haze dehydration asking allah to "protect" them

what do muslim think of people who choose not to observe ramadan strictly?

i wonder if there are any stats out there which says that muslims who fast and are working with machinery had more accidents in that month than any other month...

auctaully what i personally noticed is that the first few days are a bit hard as you been eating regularly for the last 11 months and then all of a sudden youre eating and drinking once a day after 19 hours, i found that my 5 senses were more heightened and i wasnt making mistakes at work and i felt really sharp mentally, but i dont do labour i work in an office.....
