i have a conference pear tree and even at the end of September they are ripened but still rock solid, i pick and then put them in a paper bag in a darkened cupboard at room temps for 7 to 10 days and they really ripen up and get soft and really sweet......

I used to do the same with my EX, works like a charm.... j/k of course
