My therapist says I am a habitual liar and an attention seeker, therefore nothing I say/write is true and under no circumstances should I be believed nor held accountable for anything I say. all photo's are paintings

Actually, don't laugh, but I do use a cal-mag regime under LED. I run higher ECs and slightly more cal-mag under LED than I ever did under HPS, but that is to make up for the reduction in transpiration (lower leaf temperatures) that reduces calcium and other mineal uptake.

But I also run in coco, so you need more calcium and magnesium anyway to address the cation exchange of sodium and potassium.

I also water my plants 6-8 times a day on an auto-irrigation system.

Don't worry – I definitely got the joke

The real joke is how much I say it to other growers. Except when I say it, they need it!

I remember once upon a time I used to grow in coco without cal-mag supplements and had a junior grower accuse me of lying (that I never used cal-mag in coco). But most tap water has calcium and magnesium carbonate in it from limestone groundwater sources, so it was never a given under HPS that you needed it (unless you were using RO, rain or distilled water).

I did have an interesting onversation over the weekend with the chemist who founded Hygen Nutrients about some of the new "LED formula" nutrients that are starting to hit the shelves and he agreed. He's started telling hydro growers to use coco nutrients in water culture and to up the EC and calcium and magnesium in coco grows.

So yes, it's a thing.

Maybe. The "hardness" in hard water is usually calcium carbonate, but also magnesium carbonate. Most tap water also has a lot of micronutrients in it, such as iron, zinc and copper from the pipes.

Most pre-packaged hydro nutrients tell you to add cal-mag if you are not using tap water for the above reason.
