cambodian cakes

Post by scentless »

Since i don't own a pressure cooker, i steam sterilized six brown rice flour jars (2:1:1 vermiculite:brf:water) for 60 minutes, inoculated with a 'cambodian' spore syringe, and kept them in a temperature stabilized environment at around 23 degrees celcius (air temp) using the tub-in-a-tub + aquarium heater method that Bloke used in his thread.

I accidentally skipped over the part about allowing the jars to cool before inoculating, and shot them up around 15 minutes after they were finished being steamed whilst they were still very warm to the touch, so i was prepared for zero mycelium growth - but instead of scrapping the jars and doing it all over again i decided to wait for a week and see if anything happened.
to my surprise, 3 of the 6 jars survived their scalding introduction :fly:

4 weeks after inocullation

one jar finished ahead of the rest, and i decided to birth it after letting it consolidate for a couple of days.

dunked to rehydrate the cake for 24 hours.

i weighed the cake before the dunk, again after 12 hours, and then again at 24 hours and it didn't seem to gain any extra weight after the first 12, so i'll just stick with 12 hours for the other cakes.

the youngest mycelium which had been on the bottom of the jar turned a nice shade of bruised blue from the weight of the pot i'd put on top of the cake to keep it submerged.

i rolled it in some vermiculite and put it in the fruiting chamber, elevated a bit on half a petri dish. There's some coco in there to hold moisture and hopefully provide humidity. This type of fruiting tub isn't recommended for cakes, but seeing Bloke's success with his style of set-up gives me hope that it'll be adequate for fruiting a few cakes before using it for different methods of fruiting in the future.

i've cut 3/4 inch holes into it which are covered with micropore tape. i don't know if there are enough to provide the necessary air exchange, i'll see how things go and likely add more holes providing the humidity doesn't drop. the hygrometer has been reading 99/100% humidity for the last 6 hours and i haven't even misted it yet, so i think a few more holes will be fine.

the light source is going to be a daylight fluorescent or two on the lid of the tub which is transparent.

i haven't eaten them fresh since they were made illegal years ago, but the smell of the mycelium brought that distinctive flavour back into my mind so vividly i could taste them again. i don't like it at all; usually eat them with some fruit yoghurt to mask it whether they're fresh or dry. still, nowhere near as bad as cactus or kratom. those sclerotia truffles are palatable enough though.

also spiked a pre-sterilized bag of grain i've had in a box for years just to see if it was still good. i thought it might have dried out too much because there's an air exchange patch on it, but... it seems ok so far. not sure what sort of grain it is, rye?

i'll probably make a tray with it if it all colonizes.
