It has gills that go all the way down the stem and it was in the right kind of tree....The color is what throws me off but I’ve been told that is because of age.

wood type their growing on is a good indicator
i took a few classes, but shit

trusting what you read in some book?
tough to do...

watching how easily the folk in the mushroom club would chow down helped but still

besides puffballs i think id have morels nailed
the pattern of their exterior growth presentation is easy to read
then you cut them in half and see if their hollow top to bottom or not
nails them

good luck

buy a microscope and the card makes it easy to measure spore dimension

I've got a buddy who is a bit of an amateur mycologist.

Fungi is what he's doing for a living as his hobby is a bit of a Mr. Myagi aborist taking care of trees for nurseries.
That shit will fuck up a tree farm quickly and needs to be eradicated or remediated promptly so he's always busting his ass doin something with the fungus among us.

The things that guy can grow in a bag on a coconut shell block is nothing short of amazing.

Tells me all you need really is a decent tree an activated plug with which you can grow your Shittake anywhere. I don't know but I think Portabellas would be similar now? Something I'll have to learn more about.

He's now trying to do it with hardwood pellets instead of using a tree, we'll see how it turns out. Kinda weird what the local Japanese restaurant offered to pay him to provide exotics for their menu, but you need a food grade factory and it's a pain in the ass with government regulations being what they are, and you know you will pay for everything from licenses to inspections and sanitary expenses as a small business.
GOVERNMENT WARNING: Marijuana use can cause complex thoughts leading to better ideas of how to live your life. Caution, free thinking has been routinely reported with continued use.

when i make my bags. will be rye and wet hardwood pellets.
tho on my 1st bag that failed. it took to the shredded paper
the most. so i might add a layer of that to the bags.
might get some peat moss tomorrow to cover chips.
then plant some winter rye on top. to get the pile rotting.

i have dosed the chip pile 2 times with N and let it rain in.
here is chip pile
1.JPG
then i have covered it well with peat moss.
2.JPG
then i spread winter rye onto pile.
3.JPG
then i covered seed and tossed on some pellet ferts.
4.JPG
then i capped the whole thing off.
5.JPG
is good to go when it rains the rye will sprout.
this should start the pile decomposing.
when rye pops up will take another photo.

ok a crazy maybe stupid idea.
friend sent me 3 nice spore prints. can give me more if i want.
i have ordered a large 150ml syringe. i will mix the spores in
the syringe with distilled water. wait a day for spores to hydrate.
then i am going to inject a bunch of spots at bottom of the chip
pile. then wait and see. might take a year or 2 but should take
to the pile. it should be here in a week or so. let mother nature
do the work. enough spots dosed something should take.

going for it. is up to mother nature.
i used rainwater and washed 3 spore prints into a baggie.
then sucked the water up from it and rinsed bag a few times.
so i have a 150 ml syringe of water and spores. i will wait a few
days for them to hydrate. then going to dose bottom of chip
pile here there and everywhere. i am going to cook up some
rye seed so it will not sprout. i will put that in 1 spot at bottom of
the pile just for the hell of it.

then it is up to mother nature.

soaked 5 cups of winter rye overnight to expand.
then today heated pan till it boiled a few minutes.
that way the rye will not sprout. is still warm if it
does not cool enough. will do the dosing tomorrow.
i figure i will do 4-6 spots with rye at edges of chip pile.
then dose pile all over the bottom.

then i dosed each with spores from syringe.
i also did 6 spots at base of chip pile after holes.
then i filled holes back in. then topped with some soil.
