soil layering

Post by Lrus007 »

on my never ending quest, here we go again.
i grow in soil. it is 1/3 home made worm castings
1/3 steer compost and 1/3 black gold potting soil.
is a heavy soil. so i use trays and mostly water from bottom.
well i have tried something 3 times now. i used to mix them well.
now i do not mix them together. as i fill a pot, i cover bottom with
potting soil. then i put in the worm castings. then i put in the steer
compost. shake pot then fill to top with potting soil. then i pack
lightly and top off with potting soil. then it's ready for planting.

what i have noticed is it works very well. but has one drawback.
the plant's grow very fast so need lights close they stretch quick.
the good part of that is a lot less lowers to trim. it keeps it up well into
bud. then for fert's i give 2 feedings of bloom in grow they need no
more N in grow. then when in bud get the bloom feedings. then
1/2 way thru budding i give them a boost of worm casting tea with
some grow fert's and a little fish fert. in 2 days large flush of new
white hairs. so for my 10 week plant i do it at week 5. then back
to the bloom fert's till the end. looking at the pots after plants
are done i have noticed that top and bottom look normal.
the middle has larger roots throughout, a lot larger roots.
my harvest was a little larger with a lot less popcorn bottoms.
when i break up soil i will try to get a photo of the roots.
so you soil mixers might want to try 1 plant layered soil.
i make my worm castings so is a little stronger than store bought.
guess that's about it.
thanks for looking.

soil layering

Post by Jesús Malverde »

Reminds me of a garden bed prepared for growing asparagus that was there when my parents bought a house when I was a teen. The previous owner (besides having a beautiful greenhouse built attached directly to the house to grow orchids in) had I was told had the bed made by having seven layers of soil, each a foot in depth, all specifically to favor the cultivation of asparagus. I think any plant would have loved that bed though. You could probably have grown some impressive cannabis plants there. I think some serious rose growers use a similar technique for preparing beds.

One to rot
