UK cannabis seed trader fights deportation
MANILA, Philippines–A British cannabis seed trader detained at the Bureau of Immigration jail in Taguig City said Tuesday he would fight his deportation to the United Kingdom, saying that once he gets home, he would have to mount another legal battle against extradition to the United States, where he is wanted for drug trafficking and money laundering.
“I love this country. I want to stay here. The love of my life is here. I can’t sit here [under detention] for years. What are my children going to eat?” immigration detainee Gypsy Nirvana told the Inquirer in a phone interview.
Nirvana said he was worried how his Filipino wife, Leah, will raise their five children with him remaining in detention.
“If I’m deported, I might not be able to take them with me. Worse, I would have to face an expensive, protracted legal battle once I get back home because the US government will surely seek my extradition,” he added.
The charges against Nirvana stemmed from his cannabis seed trading activities through mail and online transactions. He was arrested by immigration agents in Olongapo City in August last year after the US court issued the warrant.
Nirvana, however, questioned the proceedings of the bureau, which ordered his deportation the following month. He said his business was legal in the UK, where cannabis seeds are not considered drugs.
The Court of Appeals, in a decision issued last month, authorized the Bureau of Immigration to deport Nirvana to the UK provided the plane would not pass through US jurisdiction.
*and in related news...
The Court of Appeals (CA) has ordered the deportation of a British national who is facing money laundering and drug trafficking cases in the United States.
But the CA directed the Bureau of Immigration (BI) to secure a flight for Gypsy Nirvana direct from Manila to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland without passing through any of the airports within US jurisdiction.
In a decision written by Associate Justice Agnes Carpio-Reyes, the CA said: “It would appear in the final analysis that the only concern that
petitioner (Nirvana) has in refusing to be deported is that his fear for his life and safety upon knowing that he would be flown to Los Angeles (California, USA) for one hour and twenty five-minutes stopover before taking a connecting flight to London.”
“The solomonic solution to our mind is to direct the Bureau of Immigration to make sure that his flight be direct to the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Northern Ireland…. Only then he can be peacefully board the plane without any resistance, and in the process save the resources of the government.”
*I'm surprised the UK is helping him avoid extradition to the US.
I wonder if he's still there in detention, or back in the UK now?

good old Gypsy...
stated for the record that the prospect of facing a legal battle,
was "worse" than that of having to leave his family behind for good.
nice priorities.
I wonder how Leah, and his 5 starving kids, feel about that.
he probably figures it's okay... since they can't read english.
besides, if they're anything like their daddy,
they can always do that claw thing,
and fucking eat people's minds.
